Cumulus is the only global higher education association to advance art, design and media, initiated in in 1990, transformed into association in 2001, became global in 2006. It is a forum for partnership, sharing knowledge and practices, which inspires a more sustainable, human centered and creative future. Cumulus has 286 institutional members from 56 countries and representing around 800.000 students and 70.000 staff members in 2018.

Cumulus is also known by different governments and institutions like collaborating with the EU Directorate General Enterprise and Industry, EESC European Economic and Social Committee that are part of the European Union design innovation development. Cumulus is developing may expand its partnerships globally. Annually a variety of international activities and projects also with other stakeholders than partners are going on with Cumulus. Cumulus also supports actions by the members, partners and other in different ways like endorsing. Examples of collaboration are conferences and congresses in Chicago USA with Design-ED and DRS, in Gwangju Korea with the former IDA alliance partners and the Korean Cumulus members in 2015, Festival of Innovation in India with National Innovation Foundation of India in 2016 and 2017, Government of Cuba, Ministry of Innovation and Science congresses on innovation in 2016 and 2018, World Design Summit Montreal Canada in 2017 etc.
Cumulus family meets the board members also during the annual Cumulus conferences. Cumulus member institutions have the opportunity to strengthen their partnership, actions and knowledge transfer by collaborating as they like with CEB members, president and the secretariat. Cumulus and CEB use as its creative linking tool the Cumulus website and social media, publications e.g. Cumulus Think Tanks, exhibitions, participation in project and any other activities. The board, president and secretariat represent and advocate Cumulus globally.
Cumulus has 10 multidisciplinary Working Groups led by individuals of the Cumulus member institutions or by CEB members that provide a focused opportunity for sharing knowledge during the working group meetings organised mainly during the two annual Cumulus conferences around specific topic of interest like Sustainability, Leadership and Strategy; ReVeDa /Research, X-files, Digital Culture, Women+Design, Business, Innovation and Industry, Art and Design Education and Pedagory, Contemporary Art, Fashion and Textiles.
The Executive Board of Cumulus included in the past, the first Cumulus Executive Board I seven members and the president, elected in March 2001 Rotterdam NL General Assembly. CEB II – V have included eight members and the president, elected in Oslo Norway 2004, the ones there after have included 10 members and the president, elected in the General Assemblies in Schwäbisch-Gmünd Germany in 2007, Genk Belgium in 2010, Kalmar Sweden June 2013 and Nottingham UK 2016. The Cumulus Executive Board has today 10 members from different countries. The General Assembly has the authority to define the number of members in the board. The language of the association is English.
WHAT TO DO, WHAT KIND OF PERSONS WELCOMED
General – Board and Presidency
The Cumulus Executive Board membership is a value for the home institution of the applicant. The board membership can be part of the institutional strategy of the home institution. The position is also flag shipping the visibility and actions of the home institution.
Cumulus welcomes a proactive role of each member in the Cumulus Executive Board including the president. CEB members act intensively towards the Cumulus member institutions and other partners, as well as play in many ways a growing important role towards the society, industry and business life on behalf of Cumulus. The board members must be present or former Rectors, Heads, Directors, Professors or Deans.
The Cumulus Executive Board meets a minimum of three times per year.
Two meetings are organised alongside the conference under Cumulus umbrella. CEB member can also have an active role in organising conferences, workshops, competitions, jury work, exhibitions, and projects, be invited to lecture and in any various Cumulus coordinated or related projects and events. All CEB members are invited to be ready to travel and contribute as speakers, jury members, write articles or have a number of roles as asked by Cumulus secretariat and the board and the president. The vice-presidents of the association are nominated among the members of the board. They may substitute the president in a number of missions of the president.
Each CEB member will have an own specific role and profile for the benefit for Cumulus that may also include the strengthening the partnership of Cumulus with its international partners. This role can ensure the qualitative development of activities of Cumulus with any its international partner or institution, corporate, public etc. By doing so, each CEB member also directly supports the work of the Cumulus secretariat and the home institution of the board member.
Each applicant defines in her/his application the idea of the own profile for the benefit for Cumulus including the boundary between the home institution and be ready so if elected. The more detailed role of each board member will be defined in the coming meetings of the new CEB VII.
The membership in the Cumulus Executive Board is dependent on the home institution that is a Cumulus full member institution at the time of the CEB membership of the person. If the CEB member moves to a job outside Cumulus member institutions, the CEB member cannot continue in the board. In this case, the next person in the election of the General Assembly in question will take over the position in the CEB. If the CEB member resigns, the next candidate according to the election results will step up in to the CEB. The new person will be endorsed by the next General Assembly.
The home institution of the board member that is a full member institution in Cumulus carries out the cost of the travelling in the name of Cumulus as well as the cost of work. Cumulus may contribute annually financially to the traveling costs if resources are available.
The candidate cannot apply for the position in the board, if the person has to retire within the existing CEB period. The candidate cannot either apply if during the process of applying the person knows when applying she/he has to leave the home Cumulus full member institution before this board membership ends. The CEB membership starts from the General Assembly where the person became elected and ends in the General Assembly the position is over.
In case there are more than one candidate applying from the country of the applicants, the General Assembly where the elections are to be held, will first elect among these candidates one candidate for the country to go to the final round of the election in this GA. The president can be from the same country as one board member.
