The opening ceremony of Shanghai Institute of Design and Innovation(SIDI) was held on January 5, 2017 at Tongji University College of Design and Innovation (Tongji D&I). Representatives from the local government, domestic partner Universities, and enterprises attended the Ceremony. Chen Mingbo, director of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology, said during the ceremony, “Design is the key factor for Shanghai’s industrial upgrade and restructure.”

Prof.LOU Yongqi, Dean of Tongji D&I was appointed as the Principal Investigator and the Director of SIDI. Mr.ZHOU Ping, who is former COO of Google Great China, was appointed as the Executive Director of SIDI. Prof.Zhong Zhihua, the President of Tongji University, said, “With the joint efforts of Shanghai municipal government and Tongji University, the SIDI will endeavor to establish a world-class international and interdisciplinary platform for design research and innovation transformation, bringing together technologies, capitals, and human resources, to empower and enable top talents to achieve the goal of changing the world with design and innovation.”

In 2016, Design discipline of Tongji University was selected as one of the Category IV Peak Discipline Construction Program, which is a key higher education and research development agenda of Shanghai. It means the College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University (Tongji D&I) will take the coordination role of design education in Shanghai. SIDI is one of the key actions of this Program. The main mission of the SIDI is to support Shanghai to transform itself into a global center of innovation in science and technology, through developing world-class design education and research.

“The SIDI will focus on three main thematic clusters: transportation design, design driven entrepreneurship, and TMT.”said by Mr.Zhou Ping. Dean LOU Yongqi believes that SIDI will not only support developing state-of-the-art design education and research in Shanghai, but also get the technologies, innovations and creativities from university to market, enabling paradigm shift of economic and social development.

Cumulus member and fan since 1992 Carlos Hinrichsen is back under our umbrella. He has become appointed as Senior Managing Coordinator of Engineering-Design in the Faculty of Engineering (http://www.ing.uc.cl/) of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (http://www.uc.cl/en). We know him from many contexts e.g. organized Cumulus conference in 2012 of DuoCUC as well as acting as ICSID President and as member of their board.

The Faculty of Design and Communication of Palermo University (Facultad de Diseño y Comunicación de la Universidad de Palermo) celebrated on past june “Ten Years old of Actas de Diseño”. Actas de Diseño is the only periodical-theoretical and latinamerican publication on Design, with 10 years and more than 1500 articles of different authors from about 25 different countries of Latinamerica, published biannually since August 2006 by our Faculty. The coordination and editing of this publication is realized by the academic comission of Encuentro Latinoamericano de Diseño, and is supervised by the committee of Foro de Escuelas de Diseño. Actas de Diseño [ISSN 1850-2032] is published under CONICET / CAICYT validation and is included in the Latindex directory and catalog with Superior/Excellence category (Level 1).All this qualities makes the Actas de Diseño be a reference publication for design and to all scientific community, because offers a validated place to interchange and to debate about the growing to Design Field.This meeting was held at the Embassy of Spain in Buenos Aires city, with authorities, academics and teachers from our M-Des and Doctorate on Design. The speakers highlighted the relevance and competence of this publication, its continuity, its tecnical and editorial characteristics, its availability on printed book and pdf format on Palermo website, and its free access to all its contents that contributes to develop to knowledge network on design and communication.This continued effort of our Faculty and their academic community affirms and renovates our educative compromise with design research on our region.
