The Alvar Aalto Academy’s popular spring lecture takes a look at one of the giants of modern architecture, Austrian-American architect Richard Neutra.

Today Richard Neutra is primarily remembered for the mid-century Modernist houses he built in Southern California. During his illustrious career Neutra completed close to 300 projects. Neutras architecture was based on something he called bio-realism; the idea that man and nature are inseparable.

In addition to designing houses Neutra worked on a number of large institutional and multi-family housing projects, and published numerous books and essays about modern construction systems and his architecture theories.

The lecturer, Sarah Lorenzen, is an architect, associate professor and chair of the Architecture Department at Cal Poly Pomona. Since 2007 she has been the resident director of the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences in Los Angeles. In 2004 Sarah co-founded multimedia design firm Plasmatic Concepts with partner David Hartwell. Their design practice emphasizes the use of creative communication devices: films, animations, and interactive apps to engage the public on issues related to the built environment. In 2015 she received AIA|LA’s Presidential Honor award for Excellence in Education.
