Cumulus in Cuba in 2016 in the 1st innovation conference
Cumulus was also present in the end of 2016 in Havana as invited by CITMA, the Ministry of Technology, Science and Innovation of Cuba, by the Minister Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya and Director Armando Rodriquez Battista. Cumulus board member Mariana Amatullo and Eija Salmi kept there the Cumulus flag high. During the week they also visited ONDI, the national designers´ association and the universities ISDI for design and ISA for the arts and the FAC Cultural Center in the city. Cumulus got also invited to ISA conference in March and ISDI´s design conference in June 2017 in Havana. During this visit they experienced the fantastic talent and passion of the academics, students and staff of all institutions and became more than just convinced of the high quality of the activities and development. During the conference, it was very inspiring to raise together with colleagues the flagship of Cuba; the creativity and quality of arts, design and media of your country among all those innovation conference participants from different disciplines. On behalf of Cumulus members and partners, it is a hope that both participants were able to inspire and share knowledge with these institutions. We wait for seeing the colleagues from Havana in Cumulus Kolding in 30 May – 2 June 2017!

This special issue of Studies in Material Thinking brings together research papers from a variety of design perspectives that examine visual communication’s role in meditating the complex relationships between the immaterial realm of ideas and experiences and the material realm of objects and actions. It is an area that has not been extensively investigated to date and there is a need for exploratory work that will help us to better understand practices and develop theories in relation to the eclectic range of physical and digital visual communications we encounter in contemporary society.

The universe has a way of making things happen at the exact time and place. Being part of the Cumulus Nottingham-Trent design conference is an experience of being churned out the vortex to new plateaus in a figurative sense, that is, from the idylls of a historic Manila campus to another, in the quaint city of Nottingham.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE Working our way out of the damaged now is an exhibition and symposium in February 2017 at the San Francisco State University Design Gallery in collaboration with DESIS Philosophy Talk and DESIS Lab LUCA Arts. The exhibition will be in the form of a collection of resources, ideas, artefacts–a kind of wunderkammer–whose aim to offer a dialogue on design as a practice that can “dialectically” change perceptions and reveal unexpressed potentialities. The exhibition and symposium will culminate in a publication.
The theme, the concept, and the assumptions are experimental by nature. It is a proposition and its expectations are open ended and so we are looking for things that will surprise and challenge.
Interested designers, scholars, and graduate students are invited to apply and can view the theme description and call for work here.

With the growth and strong reception of She Ji. The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation, submissions are rising. This is a welcome development. Because we are a hybrid journal, this also finds us in need of additional reviewers in several subject specialist disciplines to undertake double blind review of the submitted manuscripts.
It is difficult for a journal spanning several fields to develop and maintain a reviewer team with the right skills for all submissions. We value the contribution that reviewers make to She Ji, and we acknowledge the reviewers of articles in each issue. In most cases, we seek two reviews. We ask a member of the editorial board to write one, and we ask an external reviewer to write another. In the case of significant interdisciplinary articles, we may seek a third review.
