EESC "Design Eleven: Ageless Design" – THE WINNERS

Award ceremony and exhibition

The second edition of the EESC Design Eleven competition is ready to reward the best innovative and sustainable design project and packaging. Exhibition featuring winning prototypes will open on 21 September 2011 in the presence of the winners from Belgium, Italy and Estonia.

You are kindly invited to attend the award ceremony and the opening of the exhibition displaying the 20 most significant prototypes, including the winning designs, that will open at the EESC in Brussels, 99 rue Belliard, on 21 September, in the frame of Design September official program (www.designseptember.be).

During the opening ceremony, Ms Anna Maria Darmanin, EESC vice-president, will award the prizes to the three winning designers and teams: 1st prize - Vincent Gerkens, 2nd prize - Francesco di Luzio, Giulia Bartolucci and Sonia Fornea, 3rd prize - Mari Korgesaar and Liina Tiidor.

Design students and designers in all 27 EU Member States and European designers living abroad, were asked to focus on an important issue: "Intergenerational solidarity in times of an ageing population", by creating innovative and pertinent solutions in terms of “ageless design”, through a process of participative design (final users taking part in the design process) and/or co-design (cross-generation team-building – young and elder designers collaborations).

Winning projects.

"KEEP Cool", is an alternative fridge made of ecological and recyclable material. It is not dependent on technology that will be obsolete in a few years. The terracotta pot re-innovates an archetypal cooling system for all generations. It is ageless in concept, design and material. The project was awarded the first prize of EUR 7 000. Vincent Gerkens was born and lives in Brussels; he now works in Liège, Belgium.

The second prize of EUR 4 000 was awarded to the "ORTOgether" design project of Francesco di Luzio, Giulia Bartolucci and Sonia Fornea from Rome, Italy. Based on the experience in the cultivation of land and the demand of a healthier lifestyle this product links all generations. The project provides all the necessary tools to create your own family vegetable garden in a funny and eco-friendly way.

The third prize of EUR 2 000 was awarded to the "Darning Pear" project by Mari Korgesaar and Liina Tiidor from Estonia, a wooden tool used for mending clothes and thus promoting economical lifestyle. Young people are reminded of old traditions and to re-use objects.

EESC Design Eleven Award.

The design award, initiated by the European Economic and Social Committee in 2009, intends to enhance global awareness on social and civil society issues. The winning object will be produced in a limited edition and distributed as part of the EESCʼs communication strategy during 2012, European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity.

The European Commission Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, CUMULUS (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media) and EIDD (Design for All Europe) have joined forces in order to increase the communication impact and enhance European institutions' and organisations' involvement in sustainable design practices and innovation.
