Three positions, Assistant Professors for Intercontinental Design Education Program

Chiba University, Department of Design Science seeks applicants for 3 positions of Assistant Professors. The positions are full-time employee (non-tenured) and limited-term contracts up to 4 years during April 2012 to March 2016.

The department is starting a special design education program with funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology and the Japan Society for the Promotion of the Science. The program is designed to promote the educational exchanges intercontinentally with collaboration among leading design universities in Europe, United States and Japan, conducting students exchanges, PBL(Project Based Learning), cooperative workshops and so on.

The positions will be responsible for all educational activities in the program. Main activities are (a) teaching PBL classes in the undergraduate and graduate programs, which will be conducted in concert with industries(mostly Japanese leading technology companies), governments and NPO, (b) teaching short term workshop practices in concert with cooperative design universities overseas, which might be conducted with industries, and (c) development of the program, especially planing/coordinating the classes, under direction of the program maneger and other faculty. The positions are encouraged to pursue their own research and participate in extracurricular activities.

When successful applicants will possess sufficient design education career, the position can be offered as an Associate Professor. Besides, though the positions are non-tenured and limited-time contracts, there will be possibilities to apply tenure-track positions which will be open in the department during the contract term.

 

Qualifications and prerequisites:

- A doctoral degree or comparable design practitioners qualifications.

- Thorough knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following areas:

(1) service design, experience culture, ethnography, design thinking, strategic management,

(2) product design, touch-point on public services,

(3) social innovation, sustainability, design for BOP, design for farming/green

- Profession different from above mentioned who has unique and advance design research accomplishments or considerable experience for design practices is also eligible for the positions.

- Proficiency in English as required for the exercise of the duties.

(2) Statement for teaching/research, including brief description about your experience relevant to design education, research or practices (max 2 pages);

(3) List of academic/research accomplishments and/or list of practical design accomplishments (additional materials acceptable, such as design portfolio including 3-5 most significant works with short descriptions);

(4) Name and contact details of one (or more) reference;
