Under the auspices of UNESCO

Entries by March 16, 2012 -> extended deadline May 16, 2012

Competition Brief

Create the official logo for the International Center for Women Artists – ICWA, a new UNESCO Category II museum and arts education center in Amman, Jordan, celebrating the genius of international women artists.

OVERVIEW

At UNESCO’s 36th General Conference (November 2011), history was made.  For the first time ever, the 194 Member States of UNESCO came together to approve the creation of a new project, the International Center for Women Artists – ICWA.  The decision makes it the first museum and arts education project that has formally been approved by all of the Member States of the United Nations from its conception.

The Center will be located in Amman, Jordan, but will be the home for the work of contemporary women artists from around the world.  ICWA will have both a permanent collection of art, as well as temporary exhibits.  It will also have a travelling exhibit that will bring ICWA’s work to those who cannot travel to Amman.

The Center will also have artists in residence, and will have space for live performances, film and lectures.  Working with major technology partners, ICWA will also be present online, bringing its collections and art to people around the world via internet.

The main idea of the Center is to create a place at the crossroads of civilizations – in Jordan – where free expression, education, culture and art are welcome and encouraged.  The idea of peace through art has been at the heart of the ICWA project from the start.

The challenge is to design a logo (symbol/pictogram) representing the International Center for Women Artists. This logo is intended for use on all of ICWA’s communications, including on stationery, brochures, and collateral materials including possibly in video clips, on signage and on the web.

As a UNESCO Category II center, the winning logo will be integrated and presented side by side with the UNESCO “temple” logo.  However, your design should not incorporate any part of the UNESCO, United Nations logos or symbols in your design.

DESIGN BRIEF

-Your entry may contain the words: International Center for Women Artists.  You may also use the acronym ICWA as an element of your logo.  A symbol or pictogram instead of initials or words is also possible.  At the bottom, the words, “Under the auspices of UNESCO” should appear.

-Your entry should include both a black and white and a color version.

-Entrants must keep in mind the international nature of the program and avoid any reference to a particular country, region, culture or religion.

-If you are entering more than one concept, do not include these different concepts in the same entry, but instead create separate entries for each concept.  Each person may submit up to three separate entries.

-Variations of the same concept should be presented as a single entry with up to six images per entry.

-Any person submitting a logo within the framework of the competition certifies and warrants that his/her proposal does not violate the rights of a third party or any copyright.

-The logo that is selected for the International Center for Women Artists will be the exclusive property of the ICWA Foundation.  The ICWA Foundation shall acquire exclusive ownership of the winning logo by including the right of adaptation of the logo. All entrants must be prepared to assign full copyright of their design to the ICWA Foundation in the event their proposed design is selected as the Overall Winner.
