Master of Arts in Communication Design

Next course starting in September 2012 – apply now!

You are a talented graphic designer or illustrator with graphic skills?
You have absolved a BA-Programme and maybe you’re already quite successful in the markets?

And you still miss «something»?

— maybe to have better arguments in a world with a lot of good (lay) designers?
— maybe to get more theoretical deepening of what you do in you every day work?
— maybe that you can show, what you have to say to a relevant and actual topic?
— maybe te find an bridge passage to design research?
— maybe how to cope the feeling that you never solve «only» formal but also social questions?

To find out how to visualize as adequate as possible what people (client’s or your messages) want to tell to other people (recipients) you do have to understand what communication design ment in history and what it can mean today. And especially the role you as a designer play in todays designprocesses. In the future markets you will not simply solve given designproblems, you as a personality will be part of the Solvants. You’ll analyze designproblems and help to define the processes that lead to better solutions. You criticise and innovate basic questions about the profession and it’s social responsibility, it’s genres, medias an technologies. As a communication designer you mediate between science and society, technology and user, communities and public authorities etc. You’ll work in teams with partners of different disciplines…

We offer you the opportunity to learn how to combine your point of view on important topics and designproblems with your visual language into relevant communication products for the «audience». At Bern University of the Arts therefore is a highly individual mentoring in the practical projects (4 designprofessors par class with 16 to 18 students). These quite free semesterprojects are accompanied by courses in design history and theory and introductions in design research. And – of course – you’ll deepen and enlarge your graphic skills.
