March 2, 2012
The Desis Philosophy Talks aim at creating a dialogue between design for social innovation research and the disciplines of the social sciences and humanities
Presented by The DESIS Network, Parsons The New School for Design (New York, USA) and MAD Faculty (Genk, Belgium)
Desis Philosophy Talk #1:
Is sustainable social innovation generating a new aesthetic paradigm?
Social innovation cases from diverse contexts around the world appear to have common qualities. These qualities attest to new ways of organizing the resourcing of everyday life and the social relations that sustain those organizations.
What does it mean to say that social innovations have an aesthetic? Does this amount to a new paradigm in aesthetics? What can philosophies of aesthetics teach us about social innovation, and vice versa?
The discussion will be based on a background paper proposed by Ezio Manzini and Virginia Tassinari. Invited discussants are Victor Margolin, Clive Dilnot, Cameron Tonkinwise, Tom Fisher and Margherita Pillan.
Design for Sustainable Social Innovation and Sustainability Lab is a research lab at the School of Design Strategies, Parsons The New School for Design Its mission is to advance the practice and discourse of design-enabled social innovation toward more sustainable cities. DESIS Lab conducts research into the ways in which design can enhance community-led initiatives in the development of more sustainable ways of living and working.
