The former Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering have merged to form the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. The new school combines design, media, architecture, film, art education and art. The key areas of research in the school are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, well-being architecture and emerging technologies, and urban planning and design.

The Department of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design (ELO) invites applications for the following position:

PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE IN FILM EDITING

The position will be filled on the basis of artistic merits and the successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position will begin during the year 2013.  

The Aalto Professor of Practice (PoP) system is intended especially for the field of art, design and architecture. The Professor of Practice position provides departments with the possibility to hire highly respected professionals opening new areas of teaching and research / artistic and professional work. The position also provides possibility for re-evaluation and dynamic development of the field.

The Professor of Practice is considered a professorial position with Aalto-level requirements and external evaluation. The departmental committee will also evaluate the applicants. A doctoral degree or comparable artistic qualifications and significant expertise in teaching and/or research/artistic and professional work are required for obtaining a Professor of Practice position. Furthermore, Professors of Practice are required to be committed to developing the field through research/artistic and professional work and teaching activities.

The person appointed to the position is expected to exercise and guide artistic work, to provide education based on it, to follow the advances of and research on the field and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in the field.

 

Aalto University follows the salary system of universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTION PICTURE, TELEVISION AND PRODUCTION DESIGN

The professorship is located in ELO, the Department of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design, see http://elo.aalto.fi/en/. ELO consists of two degree programs: film and television, and scenography. The Degree Program of Film and Television provides teaching in seven areas of specialization:  directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary film-making. The Degree Program of Scenography offers three areas of specialization: production design, scenography and costume design. In addition, the Department provides teaching in the history of the cinema and courses in development of research skills. The Department collaborates closely with the Theatre Academy Helsinki and with other higher education institutions specialized in arts, as well as with polytechnics specialized in the audio-visual field. The open position is administered by the Degree Program of Film and Television.  

The Degree Program of Film and Television trains the students in the practical skills and knowledge needed

in film-making and television through workshops, theory courses and film-making assignments.  The history

of cinema also plays a key role in the program. ELO’s people-centred research based on artistic work has an impact on the regeneration and development of the entire field. 

The Department educates visionary artists for the various professions related to TV and film, providing them with the necessary tools - methods and skills - to realize their films and stories in their own style.

The Department of Motion Picture, Television and Production Design provides an opportunity for pursuing doctoral degrees which include artistic elements. Issues arising from the artistic, aesthetic-philosophical or technical aspects of film-making or its production are at the heart of the people-centered research of the Department. Contacts with international higher education institutions and universities in the field of arts engaged in similar research of TV, film and scenography are an essential part of the research activities of the Department.
