CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Fashion and Textile Strategies for Sustainable Design and Consumption
Guest Editor
Kirsi Niinimäki, School of Art and Design, Aalto University, Finland
In recent years sustainability has emerged as one of the main streams in the area of design. Yet more research knowledge is needed, how to implement sustainable textile and clothing design and further how sustainable design can influence into sustainable consumption. The environmental and ethical issues in the textile and clothing industry are complex, and traditionally they have been seen through a very limited lens. The focus has mainly been on eco-materials or ethical manufacturing principles. The primary objective of this special issue on Fashion and Textile Strategies for Sustainable Design and Consumption is to bridge the current knowledge and practices concerning sustainable fashion and textile design to contemporary consumption patterns. Moreover the question, how to create design systems which encourages sustainable consumption, is relevant. The focus is in a multidisciplinary approach of research fields such new sustainable design strategies, system thinking, new eco-materials, green economic systems, Product Service System thinking PSS and Sustainable Consumption Production approach SCP. In particular, we encourage submissions that consider both theoretical and practical issues relevant, but not entirely limited, to the following topics:
- New sustainable textile and fashion design strategies combined with new materials or technologies
- Emerging fashion and textile strategies in the context of sustainable design
- Fashion and textile design systems which aim for sustainable consumption
- New eco-materials for textile and fashion manufacturing
- Green economic systems in the field of fashion and textile design
- Product service systems PSS for textiles and clothing
- Sustainable innovations in the field of textiles and fashion
- Consumer perspectives towards sustainable textile and fashion design

Kirsi Niinimäki
School of Art and Design, Aalto University, Finland
In recent years natural colorants have been studied intensively for the aim to use them in ecological textile production. Also values of cultural and social diversity have been taken into account when talking about natural colorants and their applications. The primary objective of this special issue on The influence of natural colorants in modern textile design and production is to bring together the current knowledge, methods, practices and challenges concerning natural dyes and pigments. The focus is in a multidisciplinary approach of research fields such as colorant production and qualities of dyes and pigments, techniques of applications, textiles and fashion design and consumer perspectives. Cultural, economical and environmental aspects of natural colorants and their applications are also considered. In particular, we encourage submissions that consider both theoretical and practical issues relevant, but not entirely limited, to the following topics:
- colorant production, dyes, pigments
- techniques of applications, dyeing and printing techniques
- design for natural dyed and printed textiles
- quality of final textile products
- consumer perspectives towards natural dyed and/or printed textiles
- economical aspects of the usage of natural colorants
- environmental aspects of the usage of natural colorants
- cultural aspects of the usage of natural colorants
- green textiles and natural colorants
