Cumulus: ELIA NXT Making Living of the Arts EU project closing conference, opening of NEU/NOW Festival

Amsterdam NL in 14-15 September 2017 & Tea-for-Two; the Turn of an Era

All success to Maria! Never say goodbye Carla!

Cumulus became a partner in the project led by European League of the Institutes of the Arts ELIA in 2015 in the EU funded project to find out solutions and see the state of affairs how artists can make the living out of their arts. As the plan, the final conference was held 14-15 September 2017 with 118 delegates, the speakers, the steering group and hosts Academy of Theatre and Dance, Amsterdam University of the Arts for a motivating NXT Conference Making a Living from the Arts. During the two-day programme delegates addressed the challenges that the contemporary arts sector is facing and explored the creative solutions that are being developed. The NXT Conference stimulated a critical debate on what is meant with cultural entrepreneurship in and outside academia. The issue is not different under the umbrella of Cumulus and for sure the NXT Accelerator will be continued by ELIA, but also be a topic for development among Cumulus, not only talking about internships but for what and why and how we educate. It was visible during the days there are a growing number of different institutions, accelerators, incubators and mechanisms as business or NGOs or cities or equivalent to use arts more. It is clear more assistance is needed after the studies and also during the studies to give tools to the students to make living from their knowledge. One of the prerequisites is the dialogue of education and research with society in its large.

During the days, the 9th NEU/NOW Annual Festival of ELIA where a number of also Cumulus students got their work exhibited also in real at Westergasfabriek. The festival welcomed 44 artists from 16 countries. NEU/NOW is Amsterdam’s transdisciplinary art festival devoted to presenting the work of exceptional emerging talents advancing from art academies across Europe and beyond. NEU NOW brings together a generation of rising artists from across Europe and beyond in a curated selection to share their works, practices and cultural perspectives in ways that encourage future collaborations.

The turn of an era also happened during the days. A touching moment was the final farewell of Executive Director Carla Delfos from ELIA in the evening of 15 September 2017. She got a surprise becoming given a Dutch high level distinction of her life-time work promoting the culture in the city, the Andreaspenning distinction by the Amsterdam Deputy Mayor, Kajsa Ollongren who took to the stage at the ELIA Handover ceremony in 15 September 2017 in the evening. The night revolved around Carla Delfos’ farewell and the handover of her responsibilities to the new Executive Director Maria Hansen with whom and her team Cumulus will continue collaborating. Carla Delfos will not disappear and will welcomed by Cumulus and our members in the future. SG Eija Salmi met her for the 1st time already in 1990 when ELIA, too, was founded.

All success to Maria! Never say goodbye Carla!
