Dean of Academic Programmes at Central Saint Martins
CSM, UAL, UK
Apply by April 4, 2018
We wish to appoint a new Dean of Academic Programmes (AP) to oversee, manage, support and develop our four programmes in Fashion; Jewellery and Textiles; Product, Ceramics and Industrial Design; and Spatial Practices.
Central Saint Martins (CSM) is a world-leading centre for arts and design education. Its reputation stems from the creative energy of its staff and students and the stellar achievements of its graduates nationally and internationally. CSM sits at the heart of London’s creative scene, and of one of Europe’s most dynamic new culture and innovation quarters at King’s Cross, making the college increasingly important to London’s cultural life, and indicative of our general desire to open up CSM to as broad an audience as possible. The nine programmes at CSM explore the boundaries of their discipline. Students and staff are continually alert to new ideas, and are curious and restless in developing beyond the expected norms of their subject.
We now wish to appoint a new Dean of Academic Programmes (AP) to oversee, manage, support and develop our four programmes in Fashion; Jewellery and Textiles; Product, Ceramics and Industrial Design; and Spatial Practices. The role of the Dean for Academic Programmes (AP) is central to the success of Central Saint Martins and to its smooth operation. With subject-specific leadership coming from the programme directors, the two Deans (AP) work with these communities to promote effective management and enable productive relationships with administrative, technical and other central teams. The role is thus about empowering and enabling, as well as managing, and is therefore collaborative in nature. The Dean (AP) also oversees the work and output of the programmes in relation to TEF, REF and Knowledge Exchange activities.
In this appointment we are looking for an inspirational leader, with experience of leading teams effectively and promoting collaboration across functions, and a strategic thinker. Strong candidates will bring experience of running innovative and successful design/creative industries courses, as well as thinking creatively about opportunities for income generation and external engagement. The Dean (AP) will need to be able to plan effectively, shape and influence developments, and prioritise and manage complex projects in order to achieve the College’s long term strategic objectives. In order to succeed, a detailed understanding of wider sector and disciplinary trends, and the ability to anticipate their potential impact on CSM, will be crucial.
