DESIGN INSPIRING HUMANISM

2009 CUMULUS INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE EARTHQUAKE DISASTER RELIEF

Background

The earthquake disaster in China in 2008 triggered countrywide and mobilized the Government and universities to investigate research and develop necessary solutions, to ensure less damage and loss of life in the future.

Many institutions in China and worldwide have offered assistance in different areas both in financial aid and in real projects. Many complete school projects, temporary and permanent accommodation shelters have been created and still, a lot is under construction.

The serious attack by nature could be greatly alleviated with a worldwide effort and multidisciplinary taskforces, to develop new tools and understanding of how to handle emergencies, whether large or small scale, adapted and usable in local conditions.

There are a number of general areas which can be considered, each with a subdivision of specific project opportunities. None is more important than the other.

  • Special sanitation and shelter units for different categories of survivors elderly, children, family's and professional search and rescue teams
  • Pre disaster identification tags with stored essential information about the carrier - a ring - a necklace - a watch, a clothing attachment etc.
  • Hand operated electric generators, solar energy storage systems Earth, building, and lifting and removal equipment.
  • The health aid area offers many possibilities, from easily dispensed injection needles and dehydration equipment, to lifting and transporting injured.

These are just some examples, we would expect many more ideas will be generated.
