PhD program - the Department of Design Science, Graduate School of Engineering, Chiba University, Japan

Graduate School of Engineering, Chiba University offers a PhD program in Design Science. Since the foundation of the department in 1922, we have always led the field of design in Japan through research and education. By encouraging "cross-fertilization", i.e., highly creative activities emerging from the interaction among various scientific fields, we have produced designers, design directors, and design researchers who can meet the diverse demands of today and the future. We conduct research very actively with various supports from the government and private companies, and we are in collaboration with top design schools and world-leading companies in Japan and around the world. In our PhD program, we offer research-based programs, and Service and Product Design program (SPD). Research-based programs are conducted by each unit: Product Design (including Transportation Design), Design Management, Materials Planning, Design Morphology, Communication Design, Human Informatics, Design Psychology, Environmental Design, Humanomics (Ergonomics for human life), Design Culture, and Contextual Design. SPD consists of studio-work and design projects with partner companies. SPD was selected as one of the World's Best Design Schools by BusinessWeek in 2009. A financial aid may be available for applicants with excellent academic record.
