RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND MAIN RESEARCH AREAS Research Group: Media Design Network The creative economy is an important factor when companies select a location, and universities of applied sciences view themselves as vital partners in the creative economy. In cooperation with institutions and companies in the media/communications sector, degree programmes in the design of media information, communication and interaction have come together to form a media design network, which is partially funded by the FHplus programme. Several small projects support instruction, generate materials for campus radio and TV, supply instructors and professional practical training positions or provide a forum for e-learning didactics. Such projects also aim to promote and advance theory in a field that has previously been defined by experimental work and best practice models. Furthermore, it is expected that these partnerships and incentives will lead to the establishment of spin-outs resulting from the transfer of technology. SUMMARY OF MISSION STATEMENT Studying Media Design at Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences means being creative, developing concepts, conducting research and being able to work in interdisciplinary teams. With its focus on the design of information and communication and on the multimedia interplay of word, image, sound, person and motion, the offered programs are quite unique in the Lake Constance area and therefore attract not only students from all over Austria, but also from the neighbouring countries Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The Mission Statement in detail: Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences - Mission Statement Mission _ To support social development by providing impetus for long-term economic growth in the Vorarlberg region _ To ensure the success of both our graduates and their employers by providing excellence in teaching and learning for all of our students _ To conduct research that can be applied to real-work situations by building bridges between research, business and industry, and society Vision It is the aim of the University to provide impetus in research and development for the region so that in twelve years time Vorarlberg and the surrounding area form one of the leading areas in Europe, both in terms of economic power and quality of life. _ To secure the future of the region through education Each year the University receives far more applications to its full-time degree and continual professional degree programs than there are places. By playing a leading role graduates of the University actively shape the regional economy and society. Through the alumni organization graduates maintain close ties to and see themselves as ambassadors of the University. _ To make the region strong through innovation Businesses and institutions throughout the Lake Constance region (Euregio) are keen to work together with the University in order to profit from our excellent track record in research and development, as documented by the high number of internationally financed projects and prizes. Further impulses to the region are provided by the successful business ventures of our graduates. _ To establish trust and cooperation through openness Openness, trust and commitment characterize both how faculty, staff and students work with each other and how they work with all social groups and stakeholders through the University’s active participation in the life of the region and through the University’s international ties with renowned research and teaching institutions throughout the world. Position _ Interdisciplinary research and teaching The University has four main areas of teaching and research: business administration, engineering/computer science, design, and social work. Teaching and research in all of the University’s full-time and continual professional development degree programs is interdisciplinary. It is very common for colleagues from three departments or more to be participating in several Austrian and international projects. _ Select areas of research The University has chosen to focus on select areas of research and to cooperate with partners throughout the world in these areas of research _ Faculty excellence in teaching and in research Through the high number of full-time faculty with a PhD and/or publications, the University actively promotes an environment that supports excellence in teaching and research. While some lecturers choose to focus on teaching by combining the latest theories and methods with real-work learning activities in their classes, others choose to focus more on basic and applied research and development. _ Excellent student-staff ratio Well over half of all classes is taught by full-time faculty and mostly all thesis and professional practical training advising and support is done by full-time faculty. Furthermore, effective learning is promoted through students working in small groups in a modern infrastructure. _ Support for gifted students The University actively supports gifted students by providing them with the opportunity to work in its research and development units and experience research at first hand, to participate in international student exchange programs and receive tuition fee waivers, or to work as student assistants. Upon graduation they also have the opportunity to go on to (further) graduate studies at one of our partner institutions at home and abroad. _ Varied teaching and learning methods The University supports an appropriate mix of teaching and learning methods and the integration of new methods and methodologies in instruction. Instruction and learning at the University include problem based learning, self-organized leaning, blended learning, expert lectures, projects and case studies, business games and real-work exercises, etc. |
