MAIN FOCUS IN EDUCATION
The Department of Arts and Design offers a full range of educational pursuits in Design, through its Bachelor and Graduate (Master and Doctor) Programs and also by way of irs continued education courses.
Its educational focus is oriented towards preparing students as competent individuals, fully qualified for the performance of their academic and/or professional roles.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND MAIN RESEARCH AREAS
The Graduate Program´s elected main area of research is "Design and Society", which embraces studies related to the multiple aspects and many interfaces of Design with technology, arts and the human and social sciences.

This main area branches out into three research lines, which congregate different research laboratories:

1)Communication, Culture and Arts
Associated Laboratories: Laboratory of Communication in Design; Laboratory of Sensibility and Sensorial Representations.
2) Technology, Education and Society
Associated Laboratories: Ecological Design Laboratory; Laboratory for Design Management; Laboratory of Design History; Laboratory of Electronic Art; Laboratory of Social and Political Uses of Design; Laboratory of living design; Laboratory of Design Education.
3) Ergonomics, Usability and Human-Computer Interaction
Laboratory of Ergonomics, Usability and Huamn-Computer Interaction

PUC-Rio is a private non-profit instituion, whose main goal is the production and transmission of academic and scientific knowledge, based upon Christian humanistic principles, aimimg above all at benefiting society.
THE ROLE OF THE MEMBER UNIT IN INTERNATIONAL SECTOR AND ITS COLLABORATION WITH PARTNER UNIVERSITIES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS
The role of the Department of Arts and Design in the international sector has so far expressed itself through systematic collaboration and cooperation with some international institutions.
The DAD has a formal cultural educational and scientific agreement with University of Arts and Design Helsink.

The Graduate Program of Design at PUC-Rio was the first Master and Doctor degree graduate program in Design in South America. It is still the only Doctor degree program in Brazil. As such, it plays a very central role in Design education and research in Brazil.
