SUMMARY OF MISSION STATEMENT
Launched by the University of Toulouse-Mirail/The Art and Design Department and the CIAM (Mirail artistic initiative centre), Design en Réseau is a pedagogical program aiming to promote professionalism, and to benefit the students enrolled in design modules. The Art and Design Department (Department of History, Art and Archaeology) of the University of Toulouse-Mirail is one of very few French university departments to propose a design course over the three years of the Bachelor degree as well as for the Masters and Ph D programs.

The project, progressing over three years (2005-2008), is based on an innovative pedagogical approach and becomes available to the public through exhibitions presenting the students’ output.
Its originality is mainly due to
-its European dimension
-the established partnerships with the economic and industrial sector
-the creative process and examination through inter-designer competition (“concours”)
-collaboration with educational and cultural institutions

As a result of Design en Réseau, each student can prepare themselves to tackle the reality of professional design and become familiar with creation and production procedure. Professional relations on different levels are built, and the student will be integrated into an international dynamic.
THE ROLE OF THE MEMBER UNIT IN INTERNATIONAL SECTOR AND ITS COLLABORATION WITH PARTNER UNIVERSITIES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS
This is one of the project’s most central features. According to current projects, teacher and student exchange programs are developed with universities and art academies in Spain, Italy and Austria.

During 2005-2006, the University of Valencia Cardenal Herrera CEU, the superior design academy Elisava, and the Massana academy (art and design centre) in Barcelona have all been directly associated with the project.

This collaboration has been carried out through two workshops lead respectively by the Spanish designers Marcelo Alegre and Curro Claret at the University of Toulouse-Mirail (See “The Workshops”), and equally through the exhibition which is to take place in April: Les Rencontres de la Création Design 2006.

In 2006-2007, the University of Florence will introduce Italy to Design en Réseau, and in 2007-2008 Austria will join through a European International exchange program entitled Socrates Intensive Program (See Design en Réseau: the 2006-2007 projects).
THE ROLE OF THE MEMBER UNIT IN NATIONAL AND REGIONAL SECTORS AND IN HOME CITY AND ITS COLLABORATION WITH PARTNER UNIVERSITIES, ASSOCIATIONS, INDUSTRIAL AND BUSINESS CONNECTIONS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS.
Local groups, financial institutions and industry representatives from the respective countries make an important part of Design en Réseau as a whole.

These partners’ objectives consist of:
-helping students to find technical and financial solutions to their projects, bringing them closer to their professional sector;
-giving industrials the opportunity to reassess themselves by bringing a new creative potential to their product;
-turning design into a development sector for a region, and so carrying a contemporary image uniting creativity and industrial know-how.
