RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND MAIN RESEARCH AREAS Research in the School of Art & Design is coordinated by Professor Paul Sermon, Associate Head for Research. There are over 30 fully research-active academic staff and a number of embryonic and early career researchers engaged in a range of innovative creative practice in art and design and in advancing the boundaries of theoretical investigation. Research is firmly embedded in teaching at all levels and our research centres inform, influence and reflect the nature of the wide ranging curriculum in the School. Research in The School of Art and Design is committed to promoting art and design research activity, internally and externally, nationally and internationally and aims to maximise the evolving synergies between research, teaching and learning, and academic enterprise. In the UK 's official national assessment of research - the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise - staff from the School of Art & Design secured an impressive national power ranking of 38 out of 68. Research is disseminated via refereed journal papers, books, reports, international conferences, exhibitions, professional practice and directly back into teaching via the curricula of the School of Art & Design and school-based research events. Activities continue to constantly evolve as we respond to a wide range of opportunities, thus ensuring the structure and research we undertake remains dynamic and impacts upon a real world context. Our three distinct, yet complementary Research Centres provide a supportive infrastructure and a framework for both projecting and sustaining the research culture. Art and Design research is structured and organised via three research centres: Creative Technology & Communications Research Centre Heritage & Design Innovation Research Centre Contemporary Fine Art & Critical Theory Research Centre |
