SUMMARY OF MISSION STATEMENT Founded in 1982, the Ecole nationale supérieure de création industrielle (ENSCI) is the first French public institute specialising in advanced studies in design. ENSCI is placed under the authority of the French ministries for culture and industry. In 1985 ENSCI extended its activities to include the ANAT, the Atelier national d’art textile (National Textile Art Studio) and in 1993, a Master’s degree in New Media Design was created. Today, ENSCI’s programme spans a broad spectrum of contemporary design applications – product design, digital design, service design, etc. ENSCI’s programme is structured around an individualised, project-based education which combines theory and design practice. Students are exposed to a range of methodologies and tools – from traditional techniques to cutting edge technologies. The course is also designed to offer the critical base necessary to understand the cultural, economic and societal context of their future careers. ENSCI is located in the heart of Paris near the Place de la Bastille in a historic building which once housed the workshops of the renowned decorator Jansen. The premises are open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, enabling students to plan their work according to their own working patterns and schedules. In addition to a team of permanent academic staff, French and foreign experts (designers artists, architects, industrialists, engineers, sociologists, historians, economists, etc.) are invited for conferences and workshops. ENSCI’s partnership programme with industry offers the platform for students to gain insight into a wide range of professional worlds via commissioned projects in the school. All students carry out a six-month internship before the final diploma year and are encouraged to gain experience abroad, within an academic exchange or a professional internship. Each year, 230 students from many different cultural backgrounds study at the School and, since its foundation, ENSCI has awarded degrees to 450 industrial designers, 139 textile designers and 110 New Media designers. A research programme at ENSCI is planned for the near future. |
