MAIN FOCUS IN EDUCATION
The Arts Institute at Bournemouth has developed into one of the leading specialist University sector educational institutions in Europe offering courses in Arts, Design and Media. The Institute has been offering specialist education for over a century and enjoys a strong reputation both nationally and internationally for providing the creative industries with practitioners of the future.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND MAIN RESEARCH AREAS
The establishment, maintenance and development of a flourishing research and scholarship culture are a priority for the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. Such a culture provides opportunities for establishing and sharing best practice, current thinking and innovation, critical perspectives which have traditionally lain outside discrete disciplines, practical support and advice, and encourages work across academic Schools and disciplines in support of good practice in teaching and learning and the development of new knowledge or practical outcomes.

Research and scholarship activity provides a positive contribution to curriculum currency, students’ learning, identification and clarification of staff development priorities and contributes to the local, regional, national and international standing of the Institute as outlined in the Mission and strategic plan.
B. AIMS, PHILOSOPHY AND COLLABORATION
SUMMARY OF MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Arts Institute at Bournemouth is to provide a high quality professional environment for its staff and students, to allow them to study, research and practise arts, design and media to the highest standards, so that they can contribute to the cultural and economic development of society.
THE ROLE OF THE MEMBER UNIT IN INTERNATIONAL SECTOR AND ITS COLLABORATION WITH PARTNER UNIVERSITIES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS
The Institute’s approach to European links is to only work with institutions that have similar aims and ethos to our specialist Institute. Hence, alongside very successful European work placements, we have established links with HEIs in both Japan and the United States, and look forward to the possibility of both staff and student exchange in due course.

As an example of engagement at senior level, the Director of the School of Design is a Visiting Professor at six European Universities, as well as being a judge on the Fulbright Panel and a regular contributor at Cumulus events.
THE ROLE OF THE MEMBER UNIT IN NATIONAL AND REGIONAL SECTORS AND IN HOME CITY AND ITS COLLABORATION WITH PARTNER UNIVERSITIES, ASSOCIATIONS, INDUSTRIAL AND BUSINESS CONNECTIONS AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS.
The Institute is engaged in two formal collaborations: the National Arts Learning Network, which supports non-traditional learners and provides a progression framework from pre-degree study to Masters level work; and the South-West Lifelong Learning Network, which provides support to learners from under-represented groups from the region. In addition, we work together with all other HEIs within the South-West to support the regional development agenda. This has included the building of an Enterprise Pavilion on the AIB campus, which provides incubation units for fledgling businesses within the creative arts and design and encourages graduate retention in the South-West.

Each course has an Industry Liaison Group, made up of artists and professionals from the relevant creative industry, who can provide advice and guidance on the development of the course to meet employer needs, as well as offering student placements and live projects.

At a national level, the Institute is a member of a full range of professional groupings, such as CHEAD (the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design), Guild HE (the national body for specialist HE institutions, GLAD (the Group for Learning in Art and Design). Staff are also members of sector bodies such as the QAA and an AIB School Director was was a member of the Cox Review of Design Education, and the subsequent Design Skills Advisory Panel, which has advised government on how best to secure sustainable design education to support economic development.
