IED is a member of several international academic bodies and associations, including Cumulus - the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media, ADI - the Italian Association for Industrial Design and AIAP - the Italian Association for Visual Communication Design, and has concluded partnership and student exchange agreements with more than 40 of the world’s leading Universities in 21 countries. As considerable flexibility is a byword in IED’s academic training procedures, it can offer its students the opportunity to experience a period studying with other accredited institutions or in a different IED location.
Partnerships with foremost enterprises is a fundamental issue in Istituto Europeo di Design’s education strategy, which characterises the entire education pathway of both courses and special end of the academic year events. Thanks to the active and constant relations IED has with the economic-business world, every year around 200 companies collaborate in various ways towards the training of the Institute’s students.

As evidence of its vocation towards innovation and development, Istituto Europeo di Design has created a comprehensive reality with reference to its structure and offer. IED Moda, IED Design, IED Visual Communication and IED Management Lab meet the needs of the world of work through training pathways targeted to the specific needs of the reference industries and characterized by a common origin – the design – and by the project culture. IED Moda is a didactic and research project that guarantees the training of professionals required in all leading activities of the fashion system: from the creative to the strategic field, from the organisational to the commercial aspects, from the marketing to the communication. IED Design interprets the pre-eminence of the Italian Design through a training process based on the Made in Italy culture. It combines creativity, entrepreneurial drive, technological innovations and knowledge of the reference market. IED Visual Communication represents the wide world of communication by images and sounds. Established as the merger of IED Arti Visive and IED Comunicazione Schools, it is a creative lab that teaches the tools, the language and expressive issues, the new techniques and the technologies required to develop a visual communication project. IED Management Lab is the school/lab founded in 2011 that aims at training education in areas related to managing creativity in corporate processes and focuses on approaches to the managerial and entrepreneurial requirements of the creativity industry and of artistic output, which the whole world acknowledges as areas of Italian excellence.

master level programs
These Master courses in the areas of design, fashion, visual communication and management aim to provide students with the skills and tools they need to practice their professions with a high cultural profile and an elevated degree of specialisation. The curriculum is designed to provide students with the specific methodological, technical and instrumental, cultural and design tools necessary for the various professions, as well as to develop their ability to apply the skills they acquire and to manage the design complexity of their professional benchmark sector. SEMESTER PROGRAMS The IED Milano Semester Programs in Interior Design, Fashion Design and Fashion Jewelry are intensive semesters where students enroll in all courses offered as part of their chosen program. Milan as a global center of design and fashion as well as the home of “Made in Italy” offers a creative laboratory for students to gain industry skills, insight and knowledge. The trend and project work semesters have a distinct didactic philosophy and objectives which culminate in the completion of a final semester “work”. Programs in 2013 and 2014 are offered in the spring and fall terms. Students also have the possibility to complete a “Academic Year” option in their chosen field of study by combining the Spring and Fall sessions. Academic Year Programs combine the Spring and Fall sessions and are full immersion experiences designed to enable students to experiment and pick up the basic cultural and project based tools of design. Theory lessons are accompanied by creative workshops, visits to firms, trade fairs and industrial events and meetings with practicing professionals. The IED Firenze Semester Program is based around the traditional study abroad model whereby students select courses from the semester offering. SUMMER COURSES IED offers innovative and creative summer programs in Italy’s premiere cities of art, tradition and culture. Five IED schools in Milan, Rome, Florence, Venice and Cagliari provide the backdrop for students to discover and deepen areas of interest and skills for educational and professional fulfillment. Programs highlighting Italian exceptionalism in traditional areas of fashion, design, event management and craftsmanship as well as creative technologies and social media are all part of the IED Italian summer experience. The IED 2013 Summer Design School is an invaluable experience for students seeking a creative Italian educational experience. IED offers 20 intensive summer courses which reflect the experience and fields of study for which IED has been an international leader since 1966. Summer courses are four weeks long and held in June and July at various levels from beginner to advanced. All programs are held in English, except for the “Language and Design Experience” in Rome. Students can also experience two locations by enrolling in a June and a July program. These intensive courses offer both students new to the area of study as well as professionals the possibility to complete and enhance skills and knowledge. The distinct IED educational approach engages students beyond the traditional classroom by including local professionals and institutions and creative final projects into each course. With this in mind each course integrates relevant and rewarding visits to showrooms, studios and galleries and time to meet and speak with industry leaders. IED_CULTURAL HERITAGE IED offers training courses in the area of cultural heritage, dynamic and interdisciplinary field, in which Design contributes to the growing demand for innovative business development, communication and management. The IED courses aim to train professionals for institutions and cultural enterprises, engaged in the management and communication of projects which are able to propose content with innovative tools and methods, from the design of services to the strategic dimension of the cultural heritage system. The Schools are flanked by IED Research Centre, the place where school meets the enterprise and research meets experimentation. Since its foundation in 1975, IED Research Centre has defined a new model of operations that adapts to the evolution in markets and firms’ ever-changing needs. A cross-cultural team made up of researchers and designers with different specializations is behind an interdisciplinary process that combines innovative experiences with basic didactic. This interaction stimulates the exploration and research in innovative areas of design, contributing to the expertise and excellence that distinguishes the various different IED locations.

IED can provide a list of residences and hotels where students can stay for short periods until they find suitable accommodation. Prices to rent a flat vary from area to area and also depending on the kind of accommodation (shared flat; one-room flat; two-room flat; etc.) but they can be from 400 Euro to 1.800 Euro per month.
