mission statement

Philosophy

Education at MIT Institute of Design has been thought in a very broad manner to belong to three domains.

The first is the domain of skill. These are those design skills and design tools that should help students communicate convincingly the outcome of every stage of the design process. For this, they will learn to employ all necessary media and materials. If one has to look for a concept from the Indian philosophy that has an equivalence with this domain, that would be the concept of Sadhan.

The second is the domain of knowledge. It pertains the knowledge base the students must acquire from subject areas of varying nature. From this base, should flow meticulously gathered and researched information needed during the entire problem solving process. Again, an equivalent concept from the Indian philosophy to represent this domain would be Sadhana.

It is the third domain of formation that becomes the vital core of the design process. The total and composite learning from this domain is meant to make students think laterally and innovatively, develop, design concepts and translate the concept into a tangible form which in fact is the very solution of the stated problem of design. The equivalent concept from the Indian philosophy obviously, is Sadhya.

national role

MAEER’s MIT Institute of Design is one of the premier institutes for design learning in India since August 2006. Located in Pune, Maharashtra with collaboration with over _____ institutes and _____ companies, the impact of work done at the institute can be seen far and wide across the globe. In meeting major societal challenges, which have both a global and local dimension, MIT Institute of Design has a key role to play in knowledge creation and its translation into innovative products and public and private services, a process that can engage the creative arts and social sciences as well as scientists and technologists. Regions are important sites for innovation because of the opportunities they provide for interaction between businesses, public authorities and civil societies.

At MIT ID we believe in overcoming barriers, building capacity and implementing partnerships and leadership processes to interconnect the partners in regional and Pune’s innovation systems. These issues are illustrated by taking up practical examples and case studies taken from a range of sources and policy documents. Choosing projects that are close to the locals, creatives or otherwise, we ensure that the entire community reaps the benefits of our presence.

main focus

MAEER's MIT Institute of Design started its operations in August 2006, guided by the days leading minds in the Indian design education, with a plan to develop its identity as a research & training institution of highest international quality.

In pursuance of one of our future aspirations, we at the MAEER's MIT Institute of Design added a further dimension to the programmes of design learning at our campus. The concept of Design Habitat is in fact a logical and organic extension of our stated philosophy that ensures a total generalist ambience to enable design learning and design thinking.

research activity and main areas

Our research activities are at present very preliminary and confines to very basic research for the projects comissioned by Government of India, industries and Non-Government development agencies. At our end the research activity becomes a part of the project which the institute undertakes. To give examples  there was no India Specific insights available in the context of usage  and experiences related to consumer googds like TV, Washin Machines etc.

In other area like Women specific insights, where the activities are essentially carried out by women especially in agriculture, Road construction and garbage collection. The aim of the institute is to create a design community which will not only cater to the big industry but also to the small scale and rural industries and handicrafts. It has a social goal of developing, encouraging rural design and products for the needy and the large disadvantaged population in India. These are the few areas where basic research was undertaken by the institute and the students were also involved.

Few insights of some of the community projects undertaken by us are:

1. SWATCH Project.

SWaCH provides door-to-door waste collection services to over 2 lakh homes in 14 municipal administrative wards in Pune. A project was undertaken by our students with the aid of the faculty members to design a trolley which is light weighted, easy to man oeuvre especially for the women workers,

which is also economically viable for waste pickers & at the same time are sustainable. The trolleys were designed keeping in mind the occupational safety and are ergonomically sound for waste

pickers.”

2. NREGS Project

The NREGA TOOLS PROJECT was initiated by ‘National Knowledge Commission’ to address need expressed by NGOs working in State of Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, helping rural population to access the benefits of ‘National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme’ (NREGS).

The project is indented to address design need linked to the NREGS, which concerns those who seek employment opportunities in roads development and other public works.

Three basic implements used in rural roads development and other public works namely ‘Pick-axe’ (Gainti), ‘Grub Hoe’ (Phawda) and Metal ‘Basket’ (Tagada) to carry head load of earth & bricks needed design intervention from an ergonomic perspective particularly for Women.

Shelters/shades at sites, to encourage lactating mothers to bring their children to work sites. Portable & movable, use of local & natural materials, local & indigenous production and Women & Children as main beneficiaries of the project.
