The International & Domestic Linkages office’s main objective is to encourage academic enhancement at student and faculty level. The academic strategy of NIFT embraces a global approach with a local connect that allows the students to participate in International semester exchange/International competitions / seminars / research / exhibitions and other events, while developing valuable insights into Indian culture and ethos.

This also enables facilitation exchange of teaching pedagogy, concepts and professional ideas across  the faculty and students at NIFT.

The core activities of the institute have enhanced its international visibility and standing. NIFT has strategic agreements and partnerships with about 34 leading international fashion institutes & organisations that share the same academic direction, integrating NIFT students with the global mainstream of fashion.

NIFT was set up in 1984, in order to fulfil a growing need for professionals specialised in the field of fashion. Since its inception under the Ministry of Textiles, the Institute has been a part of India's growth as a global apparel manufacturer, and has played a vital role in the  emergence of pioneers in Indian Fashion. It now stands as a prominent leader in the field of professional education combining design with management  and technology. as well as developing vocational modules for government and non-governmental bodies. NIFT has been instrumental in setting up the Fashion Design Council of India which is a regulatory body for Fashion business and education.

NIFT creates a multidisciplinary professional environment for its students. Practical interactive instructions are conducted by trained and experienced faculty, using state-of-the-art infrastructure.  The hands-on, collaborative learning at NIFT encourages national and international interaction. This approach results in a broader outlook, enhancing knowledge through experience and discourse, and raising the level of professional education.

Since the early years of its inception, the institute has provided a firm foundation in fashion education in the domains of Design, Management and Technology. Since then, NIFT has scaled high academic standards. The faculty of the institute has grown into a community of leading practitioners, education enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, creative thinkers, researchers & analysts.

Through its journey, NIFT has strengthened its academic strategy. Invigorating thought leadership, research stimulus, industry focus, creative enterprise and peer learning have reinforced the institute’s academic bedrock. Fostering a new generation of creative thinkers, the institute is empowered to award Degrees in undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral studies. research activity and main areas

NIFT’s research division currently has 30 PhD scholars who are pursuing their PhD at NIFT in various field of design, management and technology; some of the notable research areas are Craft revival and ethnographic studies, pattern making and sizing, sunlight harvesting and sustainable models of post-consumer waste.

NIFT faculty members are also actively engaged in writing books, chapters in books and research papers in journals. There are more than 30 faculty members have written more than 100 papers in different journals, which includes Journal of Textile and Apparel, Technology and Management (JTATM), International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education (Taylor & FRancis), Berg Fashion Library. Six faculty members have written book and/or book chapters; which includes topics like Jeweled Textiles of India to Sewing Equipments and Work Aids from notable publishing houses like Om Books, Elsevier Woodhead Publishing etc. During last one year more than 52 faculty members across NIFT campuses presented papers in various national and international conferences; some of the prominent are Textile Institute World Conference, International Conference for  Fashion Colloquia, Domus University, Milan, Italy. More than 100 articles were written in various printed and e-journals on topical issues pertaining industry, research and innovations. Apart from academic research NIFT faculty members are actively engaged in design and applied research along with industry and continuously writes their views and findings in various popular commercial journals. The faculty mentor students to participate in prestigious international Competitions; notable awards won by students are like Mittelmoda Premio, World of Wearable Art, New Zealand; Arts of Fashion Foundation USA; Triumph Inspirational awards, IAF Designer Awards in Medellin Colombia.

NIFT faculty members are also engaged in innovation of systems and tools for apparel industry and continuously challenging the stereotypes. Some of the innovative researches include 3D printing of machine parts, non-evasive needle guard, quick chaining  needle, etc. Two faculty members have filed copyright for their Computerised Sewing Skill Evaluation System, which is going to be a great help in achieving Governmental goal of skilling India".

subject areas for exchange students

The Academic Collaborations (International & Domestic) has allowed many NIFT students , across its 15 campuses to participate in various Semester Exchange opportunities/ Summer Programmes while many International Students have taken Semester Exchange Programme at NIFT in reciprocation. Till 2015 about 200 International Students have visited NIFT while 373 NIFT students have benefited through exchange programme.

In addition, NIFT had entered into a strategic alliance with Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), New York, USA. This alliance facilitated NIFT students, to obtain a Dual Degree from both NIFT and FIT. Students from NIFT undertake two years study at the home institute intercepted by one year of study at FIT. Thereafter, the students resume their studies at NIFT to obtain the Dual Degree from both the institutes. Twenty two students have completed the dual degree program in the last 3 years and ten students from various disciplines will pursue the Dual Degree opportunity in 2015-16.
