The School of Design is active internationally and has established itself as a dynamic contributor to research and the community. The School is affiliated with the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers and the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design.
As part of the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering, the School is part of the Australian Technology Network of Universities. The School is heavily involved in the Centre for Subtropical Design and has strong links to the Brisbane City Council, the Design Institute of Australia, Australian Insitute of Architects and the Australian Insitute of Landscape Architects. Research activity is underpinned by substantial government (Australian Research Council) and community grants.

We aim to create a community where knowledge and skills are shared, emerging issues are explored and research is applied to better our teaching and learning practices and academic development. The Bachelor of Design (Honours) is the current four-year program offered by the Creative Industries Faculty’s School of Design. Launched in 2014 with the discipline based majors of Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture, to which were added Fashion and Interactive and Visual Design (IVD) as study areas in 2015. Accredited by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA), Architecture is a professional qualification requiring 5 years of study and 2 years practical work experience before registration. In 2016 Architecture was awarded five years accreditation by the AACA. Similarly, Landscape Architecture has accreditation recognition for level 8 AQF through Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA)

The QUT Design Lab is a dynamic hub for all research activities within the School of Design. The spirit of innovation that characterizes the QUT Design Lab is evidence in the Lab’s transdisciplinary research themes of health and wellbeing, community, sustainability, and social entrepreneurship. These themes represent broad areas of interest and function to build and foster new transdisciplinary research collaborations that seek to address real world challenges.
The QUT Design Lab benefits from the strong commitment that QUT has made in the Creative Industries and the support it provides in developing research partnerships with Science & Engineering, Health, Business, Education and other areas of research excellence found across the University. The innovatively structured research program draws upon expertise in the Design disciplines to address significant contemporary challenges, with the aim of producing research that has real world impact. Furthermore the QUT Design Lab is structured such to facilitate the translation of knowledge into action, that results in tangible impacts for stakeholders, socialand commercial outcomes, community engagement, and thought leadership among policy makers.
