Ryerson University Faculty of Communication and Design

mission statement

The Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) is Ryerson University’s Creative Innovation Hub. FCAD is home to Canada’s nine leading schools in media and creative industries. For seven decades, our unique programs have been at the heart of the evolution of cultural industries.‚Äč

We offer a premier education while allowing our students and faculty the freedom to question social norms and to become leaders in the creative fields. We take on challenges beyond the imagined and immerse ourselves in worlds that explore design and storytelling.

international role

FCAD has continued its focus on a strong international strategy with the hopes of inspiring our students to have a global perspective on the creative industries. We have recently announced that our goal is to have almost every student within our faculty be given the opportunity to have an international experience, being either a study abroad, short-term intensive program or more global courses with our partners like Amsterdam University of Applied Science, University of Art London, London South Bank or the Canadian University of Dubai.

In the past two years, we have strategically expanded our international connections and partnerships with the universities mentioned above. We have had very close ties with a number of universities in London where we have had faculty exchanges, student exchanges and research collaborations. In the past two-years we have seen researchers from London South Bank University work with faculty members from FCAD, on joint projects focused on local news, AR/VR, topics of LGBTQ & Media Activism.

In May 2017, we announced that we would be launching a Faculty of Communication and Design at the Canadian University of Dubai and a new program in Creative Industries which mirrors the one offered by Ryerson in Toronto. We are working closely with them to launch an ideation accelerator in the Dubai Design District. Discussions have already started to look at other possible programs to jointly offer.

Our international impact is very much dependant on our reputation. We were fortunate enough to be one of two universities who participated in a trade mission to Los Angeles with the Mayor of Toronto in 2017. The goal was to entice production companies, studios, and producers to bring their business North to Toronto. Our role was to showcase the leading school in media to offer reassurance that Toronto does have the well-trained talent for the film and television industry in our vibrant city. We are currently discussing joining the Minister of Heritage on her trade mission to China in 2018.

national role

As the leading school in media, communications and design, our faculty and schools have very strong ties to industry partners. Students apply from across Canada and the world to study within our unique offering of programs. Our programs are known for its perfect blend of practice and theory-based curriculum and being a University with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Many of our alumni are leaders in the creative sectors and place emphasis on much of their success to the foundation they were provided and the opportunities for learning at Ryerson University. Our alumni often come back to reconnect their industry with our students and classroom curriculum. We offer students unique opportunities to gain hands-on learning and experience participating in special initiatives. Some of these projects have seen our students working with BANFF Centre for the Arts, Toronto International Film Festival, The Offsite Design Festival, Contact Photography Festival, Stratford festival and Edit - Expo for Design, Innovation and Technology, to name a few.

Our faculty members have worked with organizations like the Ministry of Finance, Government of Ontario and the Canadian parliament to complete research and produce white papers on various topics. Most recently, our dean of the Faculty of Communication and Design was one of twelve cultural policy advisors for the Minister of Heritage, Melanie Joly. As a member of this advisory, he was able to offer an educational outlook and perspective on what a new cultural policy should look like in Canada.

Some of our faculty have been recognized on top 40 under 40, top 100 women lists and as award-winning authors for their creative and scholarly work. We are currently working with OCAD University and some industry partners on a discussion around what a policy on design could look like.
