VIA University College VIA Design

mission statement

VIA Design’s mission is to enhance the market value of our students and give fashion, furniture and other lifestyle companies a competitive advantage.

VIA Design is part of VIA University College, which strives to offer high-quality and research-based course programmes and knowledge targeting public and private professions.

international role

Our role internationally is to educate candidates with intercultural competencies -
qualifying them for the future global labor market. This we ensure by having a
strong international environment at home (more than 400 international full-time
students) and every year a high number of incoming ERASMUS students from
international partner universities. Further on we encourage our students to study one semester abroad, either with our partners in Europe or in one of our overseas
exchange programs e.g. in China and/or Vietnam.

On an institutional level internationally we are members of e.g. EAIE, NAFSA,
Eurashe, The Danish-Chinese Business Forum and we have a strong cooperation
with CDEU (the Central Denmark EU Office) in Brussels.

national role

VIA Design’s role nationally and regionally is to ensure a strong connection to the
private and public sector by enhancing design and business within the creative
industries. Through business-oriented partnerships and development projects
VIA Design aims at creating growth and innovation in the creative sector. Therefore we
have strong connections to the local industries and authorities in Herning and
Aarhus focusing on high quality competencies for the future labor market.

In order to secure this cooperation, VIA Design conducts qualitative
interviews every second year, resulting in an analysis of the requirements for the future needs of the companies.

Further on we cooperate closely with e.g. Lifestyle & Design Cluster, Danish Fashion Institute and the Danish Fashion and Textile Association.

DOCTORATE LEVEL PROGRAMS
Our vibrant and diverse community of researchers is passionate about a wide spectrum of topics within our research focus areas – from functional textiles to sustainability compliance and design thinking.
Here is a brief insight into a few of the Ph.d. projects undertaken by our researches:
How to Research the Future – Where is Our User Heading in the Future and When?
Malene Harsaae looks into how trend researchers uncover upcoming trends and seeks to translate this knowledge into a set of tools and methods that companies easily can implement to conduct their own customer research and customize it to their DNA and target group.
Retail Spaces
Signe Mørk Madsen challenges the traditional approach to designing retail stores and proposes a new design framework  under the concept of “Retail Spaces”.
Achieving sustainability Complience in a Buyer-Supplier Relationship
This project is an investigation into how Danish textile and apparel companies can better ensure supplier sustainability compliance. In contrast with previous research in the field, Ulla Normann shifts the focus from the buyer and looks into why sustainability standards raise challenges for suppliers.
Better Education by Design?
Paul McElheron’s project focuses on examining how applying design thinking principles to curricula design, course delivery, student/tutor dialogue and work assessment can contribute to improving the innovative capability of students.
The Future and Possibility of Fit and Sizing Systems in Contemporary Fashion
Mette Terkildsen’s project focuses on decoding one of the largest challenges in the apparel industry – product returns.

Functional textiles in Hospital Interiors – An Explorative Study of the Technical and Aestethis Design Qualitites of Interior Textiles in Hospital Design
Jeppe Mogensen’s project identifies familiarity and tactility as the two key design qualities that improve patient experience from an aestetic perspective. It also paves the way for further research into exploring the untapped potential of integrating functional textiles into future hospitals.
