Summary

Mission

The day to day management of Nottingham Trent University is underpinned by key strategic thinking in a multitude of areas. We aim to:

Develop confident and ambitious graduates equipped to shape society.

Provide education that promotes both intellectual initiative and the highest academic standards to prepare students for life and career.

Be the University of choice for business, industry and the professions in our area of expertise.

Be recognised both nationally and internationally for the effectiveness of our teaching and the relevance of our research.

Transform the learning and working environment to create inspiring and innovative culture.

Have the courage and will to implement change.

International role

The University is committed to collaborative activity and all arrangements are individually tailored to meet the objectives of the Strategic Plan (published in March 2004) through collaborative arrangements. NTU has a number of collaborative partners. Details on the organisations and the programmes on offer can be located on the NTU website (http://www.ntu.ac.uk/CASQ/delegated_centres/partner_inst/index.html)

National role

NTU is committed to acting as a business for the benefit of business and students, reaching beyond normal university-business interaction. The University's focus is on the twin aims of business creation and knowledge transfer by working within regional educational networks to:
• Align our portfolio of courses and research to match current and future government priorities – as well as those of the Regional Development Agency – in such areas as health and social care, food and drink, the creative industries, transportation, and the environment.
• Enhance communication and partnerships with business locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.
• Produce educational solutions to meet business and economic objectives, maximising the use of the University’s knowledge base.
• Respond to the Region’s priorities for economic growth through, for example, such ventures as BioCity to provide opportunities to develop market sectors which have previously had low impact in the Region.
• Target specific geographic areas where gaps in the economic development cycle can be addressed through the intervention of higher education to raise personal and professional expectations and aspirations.
• Create the capacity for business intervention through access to and leverage of funding sources.
• Extend the opportunities for staff and students to interact with industry, business and the professions.
• Enable knowledge transfer by providing a route for businesses to access the IP, expertise, and facilities of the University through networks and through growth of placement opportunities for students.
• Respond to the challenge set out in the DTI Innovation Report of defining innovation as “the successful exploitation of new ideas” by extending successful programmes such as the HIVE in order to encourage students and staff to be creative and entrepreneurial, and to nurture potential for new business ideas.

A key element of NTU’s strategy is working in partnerships with Further Education Colleges to build pathways from foundation degrees through degree courses and postgraduate training into the professions. Through these partnerships, NTU unites its commitment to outstanding professional training with its commitment to widening access.

Research

Research activity and main areas

Research is organised through the activities of research groups:

Art and design theory
Fashion, textiles and applied design
Graphic design
Theatre design
Art and interactivity
Pedagogic research group
Photography
Visual arts
Product design

Smaller clusters of academics working within and across these teams include:

2D and 3D
Fashionmap
mADe@ntu
Audio, visual and performance.

Staff and postgraduate researchers undertake original investigations to discover fresh ideas, designs, performances and works of art that lead to new perceptions, products and processes. More theoretically-based projects engage with a range of perspectives on art and design practice, drawing from cultural, perceptual, pedagogic and systems theory. In addition, a significant strand of activity is focused on the exploration of new technologies, innovating methods, materials and procedures. Our work is of direct relevance to the needs and developments in the cultural sector and industry and commerce, and is supported by income from a range of bodies, including the AHRC, the Drapers Company, the EU, and other national charities and public service agencies in the East Midlands and beyond.
