Summary

Mission

The Design Faculty offers Media Communication and Design Studies, leading to the degree Bachelor of Arts (BA). These may serve as undergraduate studies possibly to be followed in Dortmund by the Scenographic Design or Photography Master Studies.
The Bachelor Studies are practically and job-oriented project studies. Teaching and learning focus on meeting contemporary educational objectives of communication design; in advertising and corporate communication, in the institutional and cultural field, in image-producing and image-processing media, in three-dimensional communication design with a main focus on room, object, staging or environment.
The Bachelor programme focusses on the students obtaining a comprehensive media competence, both in dealing with a large number of basic media forms of expression and in the assessment of suitable media formats and strategies.
The modules of the Bachelor Studies Design Media Communication impart the necessary competences for the future communication designers within the course of continuous project studies.
Beside the possibility to study all competences there is also the possibility to study with the focus on a certain professional field.

The subjects of the final module relating to the Bachelor thesis are aspects of production, directing, design, organisation and presentation. The courses offered comprise the discussion of conceptual, dramaturgical, production-oriented and technical issues within the framework of the students’ real-time projects and, if necessary, set priorities.
The Bachelor Studies Design Media Communication are internationally oriented, but teached in german language. The attendance of partner universities during the studies is meant to promote international co-operation and the global exchange of students.
The Bachelor Studies take three years in six terms. Students can obtain 180 credit points according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
After a successful graduation, the University of Applied Sciences awards the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA).

International role

We open all our facilities for foreign students to participate in a lot of interesting courses in our design and photography departements. Also we like to offer our students various possbilities of foreign experiences in similar universities in different countries.

National role

Dortmund is a leading university for Photo-Education in the field of applied photography in business, fashion and advertising. In concurence to many other universities offering a visual design education Dortmund is leading in winning national and international awards for visual design.

A little but well equiped deperatment for film and video is nationaly also well reputated in winning short film awards as documentary awards. The concentration in filming is on experimental short film, music-clips, dance for camera, short feature film and documentaries.

The biggest number of students study communication design within the BA DMK. This contains graphic-design, advertising projects and short motion graphic design.
