Summary

Mission

intermediality.
\"Intermediality\" refers to the bundling of and focusing on artistic, scientific and other potential relating to the transfer of knowledge in the context of the media. At the university, inter-mediality refers to the teaching of broad media skills under all academic programmes, while on an inter-university level Kunstuniversität Linz constantly fosters its own development and enhancement as a top-level international centre of research, education and information in the field of the arts, science and business. In this regard, it has established strong cooperation partnerships with regional and international institutions, including the Linz Ars Electronica Center.

spatial strategies.
Based on excellent technical skills training in the individual courses, Kunstuniversität Linz focuses on the interfacing of architecture, design, urban and regional planning, ecology and the media. Accordingly, concrete artistic-scientific projects and research activities provide a basis for developing students\' cross-sectional skills and competencies spanning the different disciplines, thereby affording them a broad perspective and teaching the required flexibility. projects.

academic research.
As Kunstuniversität Linz unites practical creative work and scientific research as well as applied and pure decorative design under one roof, art science research ranges among its curricular core activities. Both from a methodological point of view and as far as knowledge transfer and art education are concerned, the challenging relationship between science and art requires extensive research and development of the arts in one single process. Accordingly, the Kunstuniversität’s profile focuses on cultural studies and art theory, media theory, educational outreach strategies and gender studies in the context of tangible artistic production.

International role

Kunstuniversität Linz (University of Art & Design Linz) pursues the process of internationalisation under three main aspects:

1. Professional Internationality
Art and design are international professional and academic fields. Curriculum design as well as our strategies for research must reflect this fact. Internationalisation is a natural part of the institutional culture. The university is defined as interface and integrated part of an international network of professional and academic communities.

2. Social Relevance
Art and Design play key roles when it comes to the development of cultures and identities. Hence, the university see it as their responsibility to qualify, stimulate and encourage professionals and researchers in the arts and culture who are aware of this fact and able to make relevant contributions to the cultural process within and beyond their respective fields.

3. Quality development
In our view sustainable quality development can only be achieved with respect to the Bologna process and the concept of lifelong learning. We consider this important, try to support it through international cooperation and give it due in curriculum design. We try to promote a sustainable quality culture in teaching and learning art
and design at an academic level.

Internationalisation of organisations is not possible without internationalisation of people, therefore people are at the centre of our attention.
We see ourselves as a European art and design university, therefor the main field of our international activities is - needless to say - Europe, but we also cooperate with institutions elsewhere, including Latin America and Asia. At the moment we hold about 50 bilateral agreements with partner schools all over the world. Regardless where our interest lies: equity, fairness and sustainability are mandatory guidelines for our international engagement.

Over time the ERASMUS programme has become one of the most effective instruments of internationalisation. In recent years incoming as well as outgoing rates have increased significantly. The incoming students and teachers are considered to be especially important for the process of internationalisation. They not only make international and multicultural issues more visible and perceptible for everybody, but also enhance the internationalisation of those members of the university who - for one reason or the other - are not able to go abroad themselves Today the University of Art and Design Linz participates more intensively than ever within the activity of international organisations and networks of art and design schools (CUMULUS, ELIA). Partnerships between institutions can be fostered and widened through membership of such organisations. The continuing discussion on the effects of the Bologna process and lifelong learning as well as collaboration within these networks provides an important basis for the international strategy of the university. To learn from each other has a considerable role in motivating the individuals involved and the institution as a whole.

National role

On the one hand our institutional policies are focused on the synergies in the centre of a town, that has become a synonym for media art and computer sciences. The university is a partner of the Ars Electronica Centre (AEC) and a co-organiser of the worldwide known Ars Electronica Festival. In the field of art there exist close relations to LENTOS Museum of Modern Art Linz which also has to be mentioned in this context. Cooperations with other relevant institutions as the Johannes Kepler University, Anton Bruckner University for Music and Performing Arts or the O.K. – Center for Contemporary Art are self-evident. We also emphasize different kinds of cooperation activities with local, regional and national industries. A documentation of case studies can be found on our website: http://www.ufg.ac.at/fallstudien.48.0.html
