MFA Art Practice at School of Visual Arts seeks applications for summer 2018

NY, USA
Application deadline: December 1, 2017

Art Practice is a low-residency, interdisciplinary graduate program. A carefully selected, small group of candidates come together at SVA’s NYC campus for three successive, intensive summer residency periods.

The Art Practice program at SVA is now accepting applications for summer 2018 admission. In the intervening fall and spring semesters, students engage in required, rich-media online coursework from all over the world. Participants combine personal narrative with critical theory to create works that comment on social issues.

Chaired by David A. Ross, the program’s faculty includes Suzanne Anker, Beth B, Dara Birnbaum, Kathy Brew, Lia Gangitano, Laura F. Gibellini, Johan Grimonprez, Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, Steven Henry Madoff, Iviva Olenick, Ernesto Pujol, Tim Rollins, Stefan Saffer, Heather Schatz, Sarah G. Sharp, Jovana Stokic, Jacquelyn Strycker, Robin Winters and Carrie Mae Weems.

Guests in 2017 included Roberta Smith, Martha Rosler, Shaun Leonardo, William Powhida, Andrea Fraser, John Cohen, Brainard Carey, Emma Sulkowicz, Kalia Brooks, Oliver Herring, Mark Dion, J. Morgan Puett, Kalup Linzy, Mike Perry, Holland Cotter, Jay Sanders, Fred Tomaselli, Alexis Clements and Antoine Catala.

Current and recent mentors for the program include Baseera Khan, FAILE, Tony Oursler, Anton Ginzburg, Kimsooja, Dawn Dedeaux, Ben Davis, Melissa McGill, Suzanne Joelson, Mel Chin, Alice Aycock, Cecilia Vicuña, Andrea Wolf, Wang Qingsong and Sara Jimenez.

MFA Art Practice aims to facilitate a global conversation about the arts. Artists in the program engage in research-based practices, and are encouraged to converse and collaborate across subject matters using a combination of traditional and non-traditional media, technologies and techniques. Ultimately, the program aims foster an atmosphere of risk-taking and experimentation, and to create a community of artists and culture producers who look beyond a consensus driven approach to how we define what’s important in contemporary art.
