A message from Cumulus President – On moving forward

Our priority has been to address the full array of implications for our association brought about by the crisis as we continue to hear from an increasing number of our member institutions currently in lockdown and having shifted all of their teaching and learning online.

First of all, I hope that you, your families and loved ones are safe and healthy in these challenging times. As I had previously indicated in my letter of support last month, we have been working closely with the Secretariat and Cumulus Executive Board in the past few weeks as the COVID-19 pandemic has raged on across the world.

Our priority has been to address the full array of implications for our association brought about by the crisis as we continue to hear from an increasing number of our member institutions currently in lockdown and having shifted all of their teaching and learning online.

On March 27, I convened an extraordinary session of the Cumulus Executive Board to review a number of scenarios we had been exploring to specifically consider how we might move forward with our 2020 annual conferences: CumulusRoma: Design Culture(s) scheduled for mid-June and Cumulus St.Petersburg: Design Vertical and Horizontal Growth scheduled for late October. Given the long-lasting effects on travel disruption internationally, and many of the altered academic cycles and shuffling of priorities that many of our members foresee once they return to their campuses, we have made the unanimous decision to not convene our community in Cumulus conferences for the remainder of the 2020 calendar year. Instead, we will be working on a number of new initiatives to open spaces for our members to share their experiences and work and foster new engagement channels via digital interactions and as appropriate, regional and partnered events. In order to keep our forward momentum and abide by the shared governance structure of our association, we will be convening our General Assembly virtually this year, on June 11. We look forward to sharing more details about the GA’s agenda and registration in coming weeks.

We understand this decision of the postponement of the Cumulus annual conferences is bound to be deeply disappointing. We are cognizant that we will be losing the kind of person-to-person dialogue and exchange that shapes much of the magic of our networking and learning when we come together. However, after closely iterating on a number of options, it became apparent that under the current uncertainty of the complex situation we face internationally, this is the wiser and most inclusive route for our association’s programming for 2020. Please read on for further details on the planned changes to our programming with Cumulus Roma and do not hesitate to contact the Secretariat team with further questions.

We know from emergency management scholars that every emergency of significance is a fountain of issues, competing priorities, questions and decisions. Covid-19 is teaching us that even the most prescient playbooks for action are falling short. Let us embrace this public health crisis with the creativity and empathy of our Cumulus family! Thank you for your ongoing support.
