Eija Salmi’s, Cumulus Secretary General, letter of thanks after the Cumulus Roma conference 2021.
we want to sincerely thank the team of Sapienza University of Rome for the precious work of welcoming over 500 conference delegates to Rome, both online and onsite. Rome radiates only warmth to all of us Cumulusians. This awesome event managed to mobilize the whole Cumulus Family. Thank you!
The team of Sapienza welcomed everybody on board enabling the online participation and democracy to our association from anywhere in the world, no matter of the time zone. We started working towards this event already in 2019, the conference was meant to take place in June 2020. Due to unforeseeable reasons the event had to be postponed. The conference took place online in June 2021 – a step towards a sustainable future.
More than 350 papers and posters were included, 10 exhibitions, 10 tracks and 80 parallel sessions, 20 track keynotes and four plenary keynotes were held. More than 50 universities from everywhere in the world were exhibited in the New Members Fair, and 18 schools participated in the Italian Members Fair. The Cumulus Working Groups contributed fruitfully to the conference program. P-R-E of IxDA and the DESIS Network both challenged our thinking in their online sessions. Cumulus 2021 General Assembly went well with over 180 member institutions participating, additionally we welcomed 32 new members to the association. Today we are 360 member universities from 63 countries. New Cumulus partnerships serving all of us; The One Club, Design Principles and Practises, Systemic Design Association and China Color and Fashion Association and the DESIS Network partnership has been prolonged. The Cumulus 2022 GREEN competition around food was announced, more information to come.
During the Design Culture(s) conference the Cumulus 2020 GREEN winners were awarded, future conferences announced; 8-11 November 2021 in Ecuador and the conference in Russia, 13-19 June 2022. The Cumulus Roma conference was a true unique Cumulus moment.
The Roma-team will publish the conference proceedings timely and they are committed to finalize the publication in record time.
These days together went too quickly, but will stay amongst the best memories during this difficult period. We do not have enough words to thank Loredana Di Lucchio and Lorenzo Imbesi (Conference Chairs), Angela Giambattista and Viktor Malakuczi (Conference Managers), Luca D’Elia, Gianni Denaro and Paolo Cenciarelli (Conference Design Team) and of course the leadership of Sapienza University of Rome.
