Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Department of Design, opens positions for

Two doctoral students in the area of experience research:

1. Service Experience Design
The goal of this thesis work is to find means to integrate Service Design and Experience Design approaches. The candidate conducts research in maritime industry context as part of a big national research programme. A minimum of three scientific publications are expected to be authored during the contract period, eventually to be included in the article-based doctoral thesis.
A successful candidate has basic knowledge of the scientific literature in service design and experience design. We expect the candidate to be able to conduct field studies in maritime work context, to systematically analyse the field study results, and to report the results in scientific publications.

2. Automation Experience Design
This topic focuses on employees’ experiences with work automation. The doctoral candidate will conduct a literature review on trust experience of work automation, and study other meaningful experiences with workplace automation through field studies. A minimum of three scientific publications are expected to be authored during the contract period, eventually to be included in the article-based doctoral thesis.

A successful candidate has basic knowledge of scientific literature in user experience and understanding of experience design ideology. We expect the candidate to be able to conduct systematic research such as a systematic literature review, to conduct field studies, to systematically analyse the field study results, and to report the results in scientific publications.

The application process of the doctoral candidates consist of two stages. First, applicants will apply for a project employee position as described in Submission of applications section below. In the second stage, the short-listed candidates will apply for the doctoral student position in April Aalto School of Arts, Design and Architecture Doctoral Programme. The second stage funding is provided until the end of year 2021, after which the candidate has to find the funding for finalizing the thesis. The salary is determined based on applicant’s experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University, starting from 2323€/month. The positions are located in the quickly developing Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo. Prof. Virpi Roto acts as the supervisor.

The research plan of each doctoral thesis should address an intersection of two or more disciplines. Two professors from two different disciplines will supervise the work, and the supervisors will be decided depending on the specific research topic proposed by the applicant.
