Folkwang Graduate Program of Transdisciplinary Design Heterotopia, Germany
Application deadline for winter semester 2016/17:
June 13-14, 2016
Interviews: July 4-5, 2016
The profile of the new graduate program in transdisciplinary design at Folkwang University of the Arts revolves around Foucaults concept of »Heterotopia«, which stands for discourse, reflection and confrontation between various disciplines within a heterogeneous community. The 3-year graduate program concludes with the degree »Folkwang Letter of Design« (180 credit points / equivalent to the Master of Arts). It is an ideal preparation for a following doctorate.
Heterotopia places its students as independent »authors« into the centre of their graduate study program. Students have the choice to join seven studios of different design fields in which they can develop their own research project guided by chosen mentors. Within this joint exploration the students can train their design and research skills in theory and practice.
The seven studios are: Studio 01 Spatial Relations, Studio 02 Analog and Digital Publication Design, Studio 03 Society in Motion, Studio 04 Visual Narration, Studio 05 Experiments on the Future, Studio 06 Experience and Interaction and Studio 07 Identity, Communication, Society. A special feature of the graduate program is the Heterotopia Institute for Transdisciplinary Design which offers a curated program that aims to expand and reflect design education by international cooperations involving guest lecturers of other academic fields into projects of special cultural or anthropological interest.
Applicants are welcome with a Bachelor degree in any design discipline as well as graduates from the liberal arts, humanities, engineering and related fields. In order to be accepted to the Folkwang Graduate Program Heterotopia, applicants are required to submit a synopsis of their individual art-, design- or research project that they wish to expand upon in their graduate degree studies and a digital portfolio with work samples (approximately 25 pages). A review of artistic aptitude is part of the admission process. Admission to the program is once a year in the winter semester. For the winter semester 2016/17 the application deadline is June 13-14, 2016. Interviews will be held in Essen, Germany July 4-5, 2016.
