Listening to Architecture, Composing Spaces project 2011 – 2014
Partner Project of the St. Petersburg PRO ARTE Foundation for Culture and Arts (Russia), CUMULUS International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media (Finland) and Danish Cultural Institute – Baltic Network of Design, Architecture and Music
The project aims to introduce in Russia the best European experiences in the fields of environment friendly architecture and energy-saving building construction, design of public spaces for disabled people and design and architecture for children through a number of activities. There will be study visits of Russian professionals from the North-Western Russia to EU partner countries Finland and Denmark, educational programs for Russian children and students with EU experts and professionals (lectures and workshops) and realization of a number of students’ projects for disabled people in municipal cultural institutions. The project will also provide composers from all three partnering countries an opportunity to compose new music pieces related to famous architectural spaces.
The project will be implemented in three cities of the North-Western region of Russia: St Petersburg, Petrozavodsk and Vyborg and will embrace target groups of young designers, architects and composers, museum and libraries professionals, teachers and tutors, students, children and disabled people.
Study visits will enable Russian specialists (representatives of local authorities of named cities, cultural institutions, teachers and architects) to see the best European practices in the abovementioned fields. They will create opportunities where Russian, Finnish and Danish professionals can exchange ideas and share experiences, thus strengthening EU-Russia cooperation in the field of creative economies. Special study visits will be arranged for Russian, Finnish and Danish composers.
As a result of study visits, a series of lectures and workshops with EU experts will be organized in St Petersburg. These lectures and workshops are related to museum and library design and focus on two targets – design for disabled and environment friendly architecture in the Northern countries with emphasis on similar geographical environment and climate conditions for the Baltic region. Lecturers and workshop trainers will come from Finland, Denmark, Germany and other EU countries, participants coming from St Petersburg, Petrozavodsk and Vyborg. A special chapter of the project is dedicated to the training and creative exchange in the field of design and architecture for teenager schoolchildren from three partnering countries – a special summer camp will be organized for this purpose.
At two big events in St Petersburg – an architectural exhibition (2013) and a conference (2014), the project will be presented to a broad audience. At the former, projects by young architects and designers prepared in the course of the workshops will be presented to the public. The closing event of the project will consist of a concert presenting music related to famous architectural spaces and composed by Russian, Finnish and Danish composers and a conference focusing on creativity as a basis for modernization.
An Advisory Board composed of the representatives of city authorities, municipal museums and libraries, teachers and architects will be monitoring the course of the project.
