The internationalisation of higher education policy has meant considerable changes to the context and conditions in which universities in Europe operate. Alongside teaching, this also affects research, which is increasingly taking place in an environment of international competition.
For us as a media university, internationalisation is at the focus in all aspects. Internationalisation at Macromedia University includes the fact that all fields of the media industry – film, TV, brand communication, PR or journalism, and design and games – involve global work. To put it simply,media products are export and import commodities.
International experiences in general, and collaboration with overseas universities and businesses in particular, thus come to play an important role in the quality of a university. Both for the professors, and for the students whom we send out into the global labour market as graduates. Intercultural skills have become a key asset in the profile of the present and future generation of university graduates.
The Graduate and Postgraduate School is responding to this development with a comprehensive blueprint for internationalisation, the core of which is Macromedia’s integration into a worldwide university network.
Using the catchphrase 5CU (Five-Continent Universities), a network of international partner universities has been built up, including renowned private universities which are among the best in their respective countries.
This enabled Macromedia University to build up a unique and wordwide network, meanwhile consisting of more than 20 collaborations, for example with the Monash University in Melbourne (Australia), the Kwangwoon University in Seoul (South Korea), Tecnológico Monterrey in Mexico or the University of Westminster in London.
In the framework of the Macromedia University’s 6+1 programme, our students spend one semester at one of our international partner universities. There they are taught and examined according to the curriculum of the Media School, so they can gain international experience without losing any study time.
We also collaborate with our international partners on the level of research and teaching.
Macromedia University has successfully applied for ECHE (Erasmus Charta for Higher Education). ECHE allows the university to participate in all Erasmus+ activities like strategic collaborations and Knowledge Alliances with institutions and universities from Europe and associated countries.
In 2020, the international higher education ranking U-Multirank attested Macromedia University of Applied Sciences to be one of the 100 most international universities worldwide. Out of the 104 German universities that participated in the ranking, it is even among the ten most international ones. Accordingly, Macromedia University is one of the most international German University for life-long learning in times of dynamic change driven by globalization, digitization and mobility.
Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, a part of Galileo Global Education, is one of the largest German universities for professionally-oriented courses in media management, design, arts, music and business management with around 110 professors and more than 4,000 students coming from over 80 different countries. It has campuses in Munich, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Cologne, Hamburg, Leipzig and Berlin.
State-recognised and accredited degrees
All undergraduate and graduate programmes are accredited by the FIBAA agency and recognised by the Ministry of Science, Research and Art Baden-Württemberg. In 2011, Macromedia University also received institutional accreditation from the German Federal Government's Scientific Council, and in 2014 the quality seal of the media camp in Bavaria.
The Bachelor’s programmes Management, Media Management, Media and Communication Design, Film and Television and Journalism cover the whole spectrum of media and management from print to internet, from television to feature film, from design to animation to game design, and the management and marketing of media products.
Wide network of partners for practice-led learning
In order to offer the students a close interplay between theory and practice, the university has filled its approximately 120 professorships with scientists and experts from industry, universities, and agencies. The study incorporates real tasks from the first semester, practical projects with renowned companies such as Siemens, Adobe or Sky, as well as a six-month internship. At the same time, the students benefit from individual supervision ensuring the development of their social, creative and professional personalities together with the acquisition of theoretical knowledge. Cooperation with industry is at the core of our teaching.
The teaching and the teaching projects are also very international in focus, and students in the Macromedia University’s 6+1 programme spend one semester abroad.
In collaboration with the prestigious University of Westminster, Macromedia University offers two English-language Bachelor of Honours programmes giving students the opportunity to benefit from the best of two worlds – an internationally recognised BA (Hons) and internationally-oriented study experience in the major media hubs of Germany.

Nominally, different types of research can be found at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, which may overlap: Theory-led research and qualification work (e.g. Bachelor's or Master's theses), curricular research or teaching projects, externally funded research and contract research.
In terms of content, research at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences is oriented towards explicit thematic clusters, which serve to bundle activities across locations and promote synergies. At the same time, the thematic clusters also clarify the essential perspectives of research at Macromedia University and thus have a strategic significance. The designation of the thematic clusters or research areas is developed by the Research Commission and serves to bundle in order to ensure discursiveness among a significant number of colleagues.
The thematic clusters present the focal points of research at the university and are thus also internally profile-forming in that they have an impact on research projects as well as conference participation and teaching at the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences.
