The University is also famous for its inventions and products conforming to the international standards, such as small-capacity induction accelerators, technologies for application of plasma thermostatic and modifying coatings, electrodischarge technologies, nanopowders, etc.Now TPU is the leader in R&D and has the greatest number of international contracts among all universities and institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. TPU is internationally recognised as being among the very top tier of leading Russia's research oriented universities. Research is undertaken in all institutes and faculties and the vast majority of the University's academic staff are working in areas which are acknowledged as undertaking work of national and international significance. Such research annually earns grants and investments. It is noteworthy that TPU occupies the honourable first place in Russia by the number of concluded contracts with foreign partners. According to the amount of research, it takes the second place and regarding the number of patents and licenses. TPU takes the third position among all Russian higher educational institutions (46,3 per cent of a total number of patents in Tomsk). International cooperation has been recently one of the priorities of Tomsk Polytechnic University activities. The University's goal is the enhancement of teachers’ professional development in the advanced world universities; speeding up the research activities in common with the foreign partners; strengthening international relations between different organizations and companies of the world; expansion of the variety and amount of educational services; speeding up students and teachers exchange. The important part in a system enlargement of international academic contacts and applying the international experience in order to modernize the University plays cooperation with international organizations, funds and programmes, namely: TEMPUS, TACIS, DAAD, INTAS, Marie Curie Fellowship, FP6 (INCO), SABIT (Special American Business Internship Training Program), RUSERA (Supporting the Russian Participation in EU-RTD Programs), SITE (Siberia, Information Technologies and Europe), British Council.International cooperation is one of the urgent priorities of the TPU Institute of Cybernetics. A number of activities and projects are realized in our Institute in the framework of this direction.
Tomsk Polytechnic University aims at a continuous development and consolidation of connections with industrial enterprises and companies on the basis of contractual relations. Such connections with leading domestic and international science-driven industries have allowed TPU to raise significant resources to perform research, design and technological science-intensive projects and implement them on a commercial scale. The most perspective priority fields of the University’s activity include the following: Medicine of future; Smart Grids; High-level processing of petroleum resources. In 2009, TPU became one the first technical universities in Russia to receive the National Research University (NRU) category. The programme of the NRU development requires the preparation of high-qualified specialists in the area of resource efficient technologies, the developed infrastructure of scientific and innovation activity, the development of the talent pool and excellence in the management system. IC is a co-contractor on the megaproject with the Academician M.F. Reshetnev State Corporation "ISS" by RF Government Resolution #218 (2010-2012 - 23 mln. rubles). Currently a number of contracts are realized. TPU, on IC subject areas, is included into: "National supercomputer platform" "National Software Platform" "Technology of mechatronics, robotics and APU" The preparations are underway to open the laboratory of non-industrial robotics “Intelligent Biomorphic Systems“ (anthropomorphous robots) on the basis of the Institute Skolkovo residents: OOO "SIC RSK" "Software for the new generation navigation and telecommunication systems with application of the navigation system GLONASS and drones to control the mobile groups"; "Center of Petroleum Technology" "Web-modeling for online monitoring and control of separation and utilization of the associated gas"

In 2010/2011 the university was among the leaders in Russia to start Bachelor’s training in a number of educational programmes developed on the basis of Federal State Educational Standards of the third generation. To guarantee regulatory and methodological support during university transition to the tier system of education in compliance with the Federal State Educational Standard in 2010 the university developed “Standards and guidelines to ensure quality of basic educational programmes of Bachelor, Master and Specialists training in priority development fields (TPU BEP Standard)”.
