The Universidad de Valparaíso is a state, public and independent institution, based on a long tradition which mission is to generate and disseminate knowledge, cultivating science and technology, humanities and arts, through the development of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and research, that provides expertise to graduates, professionals and researchers required by the society, within a framework of quality management and commitment to regional and national development. The values that inspire it are participation, solidarity, equity, freedom, pluralism, critical thinking and respect for diversity.
Centered on this statement, our School of Design “develops its teaching activities through the undergraduate program, providing the skills and knowledge expected by a design project manager or a design entrepreneur, within the concept of the product system in the design perspective in order to identify and to develop opportunities that demand technological innovation based solutions”.
The School of Design keeps permanent and occasionally links with American and European universities mainly from Argentine, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Spain and England with which develops academic exchange or research collaboration through the work of its teachers.
The School of Design is a founder member of the Schools of Design Network that belongs to the Rectorate Council of Chilean Universities, CRUCH. It includes the twelve Schools of Design of the CRUCH in which are represented the former ones in Chile.
At government level, there is a continuing collaboration with public regional and national organizations, through economic development agencies such as CORFO, SERCOTEC, FOSIS, among others, as well as with private institutions in the same field.
In scientific research, artistic creation and cultural affairs, the School often enters projects sponsored by public Chilean organizations for their economical support.
Our work is oriented to BA level and since 2007 started a master program with the Politecnico di Milano sponsorship.
In both, the School specializes in working with small and medium size enterprises, organizing the curriculum structure according to the productive reality of Chile, improving teaching experiences with companies and designers to bring students to the real production environment.
There is a long tradition of working in the field of Design and Crafts, fostering contacts with different artisans associations that have extended the design activities to territorial development along our country.
With these objectives, the School has established Studies Centers in areas such as Cultural Heritage, Textile Processes and Fashion, Design and Crafts, Territorial Development, Product Development and Innovation, Design Management.
