Through the impetus provided by its new director, Pierre Keller, the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne has embarked since 1995 on a committed dynamic policy of broadening its horizons, and launching initiatives to boost meetings and exchanges of ideas. lt has therefore diversified its organizational structure and teaching methods, and its body of lecturers includes a number of internationally-renowned artists, designers, and speakers. Already one of the foremost art colleges in Europe, the ECAL is aiming to step up vital networking activities and forge new links with other organizations involved in contemporary art or visual design. The official mission of the Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (founded in 1821 ) is to provide its students with an artistic education and to prepare them for careers not only in art but also in teaching and visual communication. In 1997, the Ecal has been recognized at Swiss Federal level as 'University of Art and Design', i.e. as part of the University of applied sciences of French-speaking Switzerland.
Collaboration with other establishments For a number of years, the ECAL has collaborated actively with higher education establishments in Switzerland, Europe, Asia and the USA. These collaborative projects take different forms: - reciprocal participation of teaching staff in diploma examination boards - participation in joint events (exhibitions) - organisation of joint workshops - research projects - student and teacher exchanges. Two cooperation projects deserve special mention: The ECAL is developing a very active partnership with the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), including design courses as part of the SHS programme, a joint research project, and a shared teaching and research pool on the theme of virtual mixed reality and its relationship with contemporary space: “Variable Environment/Interactive City & Crossovers”. The ECAL has developed a cooperative venture with the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Zurich (HGKZ) for the Bachelor’s degree and postgraduate studies. The two institutions also take shared responsibility for the HES part of the Master’s degree in film studies in Switzerland, which started at the beginning of the 2006-2007 academic year. A desire to organise jointly national and international events found concrete expression in an initial exhibition entitled “Centrocampo” as part of the International Furniture Exhibition of Milan in April 2005.
