My Cumulus PLUS+ Story by Pablo Bercovich
Representing University of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Participated in the Cumulus conference Diffused transition& Design Opportunities
October 31 – November 3, 2018 in Wuxi, China hosted by Jiangnan University
Argentina has a very important tradition in design, from Tomás Maldonado and its influence on the ULM School until the thousands of Argentine designers who are now exporting all their talent. I have the great honor of being a professor at the University of Buenos Aires, that is leader of the design schools in Latin America and one of the best worldwide, according to international rankings. I also coordinate, for almost five years, the National Design Plan of the Ministry of Production in my country, that has an absolutely strategic vision of design. Design is not added value. Design is value. I am very grateful to Cumulus for giving me the opportunity to discuss these issues right in China, a country that every year increases investment in innovation and development. While in Argentina the innovation and development budget is currently cut, reaching 0.25% of our GDP, in China that investment is in a growing 3%.
I am pleasantly surprised by what happened at the Cumulus conference at the Jiangang University in Wuxi in November. General and specific contents were presented and discussed, always from strategic point of view and linked to productive and social reality. A strategic-business vision, which considers the totality of the product system, starts from its raw material and concludes in its distribution to incorporate added value and distinguish it from the competition; a social vision focused on a sustainable and inclusive human transformation; a post-industrial, which contemplates the creation of new resources from research and advocates a convergence of specific disciplines of design, to leave the idea of added value and move on to talk, even indirectly, about incorporated knowledge; a vision of design for development based on public policies strategically implemented by the State. The broad set of dimensions that surrounds the design becomes a necessary quality to solve complex problems. From the mediation between marketing and product engineering, or between user and producer, their capabilities arise to optimize processes and products.
I have no doubts that the design must be protagonist in the productive transformation in Argentina, in China and all the world for the benefit of the people. And I am sure that Cumulus is going to be a fundamental tool to empower designers.
