Professorship in interaction design, digital materiality and post-industrial design at KADK Denmark

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK), Denmark
Apply by February 3, 2020

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK) invites applications for a permanent, full-time position as a professor within interaction design, digital materiality and post-industrial design. You will become part of an environment that is to develop and cultivate new proposals for interaction and product design.

The vacant professorship, which is affiliated with the Institute of Visual Design, should ideally be filled as of 1 June 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the position

The rapid technological development needs design and designers who raise investigative and critical questions about technological and societal development, and who contribute to developing and proposing concrete solutions about what kind of an increasingly digital world we want to live in.

Digitisation has become an integrated part of our lives and society. Design in a post-industrial era is no longer only about the material form, but also about design in immaterial and cross-material contexts. We are witnessing a shift from traditional industrial design to a design space where computational interaction and product design are increasingly prevalent, and where products are created, produced, distributed and consumed in new ways – through new service layers and contexts, and via new interfaces – from the visual to the graphical to the tactile, from the functional to the playful and playable. Design is no longer a case of either/or, but of both/and – and to an increasing extent, we have to see the digital as a material on a par with physical materiality.

With this professorship, we wish to place the challenges and possibilities of the digital and computational future at the top of our research agenda for design – and we wish to enhance the design programme with a reinforced focus on what new digital technologies and platforms contribute to the design profession’s methodology and the future role of the designer. You will become a driving force in the development and cultivation of new proposals for interaction and product design at an international level.

Through the development of a new design theory and design practice, we also wish to address and contribute to a critical discussion of the ethical and social consequences of digital technologies’ impact at an individual, organisational and societal level, where design can play a particular role in relation to creating debate about desirable and possible future scenarios through concrete proposals.
Through their artistic and creative competences, KADK’s design students and graduates are to be frontrunners in terms of technological development. They must be able to both create, develop and change sectors and industries, and contribute to ensuring sustainable social development.

The position as a professor will consist of scientific and/or artistic research, teaching, academic management, external communication, contribution to the development of the institute and the design programme’s cross-disciplinary teaching, as well as strategic sparring with the institute management, as well as with the management of the School of Design and KADK.

The application with appertaining appendices should be forwarded electronically via the button ‘Søg stillingen’ (Apply for position) below, to reach KADK no later than Monday 3 February 2020.
