The 14th International Alvar Aalto Symposium “New housing solutions for cities in change”
August 30−31, 2018 Jyväskylä, Finland
Organized by the Alvar Aalto Foundation.
Symposium you can hear about the Strategic Research Council’s (Academy of Finland) topical Urbanising Society project, which contributes to the study how cities can respond to residents’ needs. The 14th International Alvar Aalto Symposium will take place in Jyväskylä which has been hosting the legendary Alvar Aalto Symposiums for nearly four decades – the first time in 1979. Welcome to experience the Symposium’s unique atmosphere in the city of Alvar Aalto!
This year the Symposium focuses on current challenges and opportunities for future housing design and construction in urban areas. Areas, and virtually all countries of the world are becoming increasingly urbanized. “This urbanization has an enormous impact on all areas of human activities including economical, ecological, social as well as cultural aspects”, says Symposium Chair Markku Hedman. “At the same time there are developments in building technologies, transport systems, water, waste and energy services and digital solutions. All this means that our cities are in a state of a paradigmatic change.”
So right now we have to discuss in what kind of city we want to live in the future!
The Symposium theme will be investigated from four perspectives:
Cultural variables – what are the major cultural and intercultural changes in relation to housing?
Sharing – what kind of new types of shared and common spaces are emerging in housing?
Adaptability – which flexible space concepts and various scales of spatial solutions are relevant in contemporary urban housing?
Emerging typologies – what kinds of urban design solutions and housing typologies are needed for densifying cities?
