Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUQatar), offering programs in art and design, is one of six schools from leading American universities and two European institutions, that have established campuses in Education City, Doha, as a result of collaborative agreements between the universities and Qatar Foundation. Each of those universities brings to Qatar educational programs for which those institutions are especially renowned.

Established in 1998, VCUQatar offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design, graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking, a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Design. Located in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, VCUQatar is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. VCUQatar was the first campus established in Education City and has since been joined by Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A&M University, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Carnegie-Mellon University, Northwestern University, HEC Paris and University College London.

Position Description

The successful candidates will be a designer or an artist, educator and active professional who will teach in the Art Foundation Program. This position is responsible for leading and teaching the foundation-level curriculum for the Time studio.

The studio explores methods for time-based visual and conceptual exploration, including, but not limited to, traditional motion experiments, basics of storytelling theory, and studio projects using video, animation and sound. Time studio exposes the students to the concepts of space performance, interaction, timing, sequencing, editing, and hybrids of those forms to communicate narrative structures through time-based media.

The studio aims to balance an understanding of the conceptual framework of the subject time, with the development of critical and technical skills to allow the students to apply the learning in the future major areas of study.

Applicants with expertise in filmmaking, performing art, multimedia, animation and digital media design are invited to apply from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and will join an active faculty team. The Art Foundation program has four full-time faculty, each responsible for one area of the four core studios that represent basic tenets of the Art and Design: Drawing, Surface, Space and Time. This position will work closely with the faculty and the Director of the program to develop and build a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to the curriculum. Art Foundation faculty contributes to a culture of learning through participation and support for accreditation standards, pursuit of professional creative research, participation in faculty governance, service, student advising, and other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Successful candidates must have an MFA or terminal degree in art, design or related field and a minimum of two years teaching experience related to the principles of the Time studio. Candidates with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level with an established record of accomplishments in research or professional creative work are strongly preferred. Strong digital, collaborative and communication skills are required; Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCUQatar. Experience teaching introductory studio level is preferred.
