Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full time, tenure track position of Assistant or Associate Professor to teach Sculpture within the Audain Faculty of Visual Art and Material Practice. Based in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning community dedicated to research and the education of artists and designers.

Candidates should have a Master of Fine Art or equivalent and a minimum of two years related post-secondary teaching experience that includes proven experience in curriculum development. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of both traditional and contemporary methods of making and significant evidence of active engagement with discourse within contemporary art and particularly sculpture practices. The successful candidate will possess a combination of skills related to the production of sculpture, including wood and metal fabrication, casting and mold making methods and techniques. The ability to integrate the use and critical assessment of new tools, media and methods such as digital prototyping and fabrication, as well as other digital new media into the Sculpture curriculum is integral to the position.

The position requires the demonstrated ability to teach, preferably at all levels from Foundation to Graduate Studies. In addition to teaching and graduate supervision, faculty are expected to contribute to curriculum development and planning, participate in admission portfolio reviews and upper-level critiques, maintain an active research/professional practice profile, and be an active and engaged member of the Emily Carr community.

The successful candidate will have an active artistic research practice and a substantial exhibition and/or publication record with a solid, demonstrable foundation in material practice. The successful candidate will have established national standing and be active in an international context.

The successful candidate for this position will be able to articulate a strong vision for the Sculpture program, its position in relation to the professional field, and its engagement with prominent contemporary art discourses. The Sculpture curriculum at Emily Carr operates within the context of interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs. With strong ties to the University’s research initiatives, the area encourages exploration, artistic innovation and material literacy. The University seeks an individual with the ability to collaborate with faculty in the Sculpture area and other disciplines, and with administration, in the development and implementation of curricular initiatives that can raise the profile of the Sculpture program to a position of international leadership.

With the pending move to the new Great Northern Way Campus in 2017, there is a distinct opportunity to reconsider a sculptural practice, its collaborations and its attendant production facilities.
