At the Department of Design we offer programmes that give students a solid foundation for design and articulation of design concepts, where emphasis is on the combination of artistic work and theory. Scope of the position: Indefinite period, 100 %
The main task is to develop students’ understanding of design, its effect on our lives, and the need for meaning and belonging, in line with the Department’s focus on sustainability, curiosity and change-making design. The employee follows and supports the development of the design subject, with special emphasis on cultural studies as well as art and design theory. As an employee, it is important to actively participate in the Department’s internal and external work.
The duties include teaching design at first and second-cycle level. The duties also include developing the education and the quality of the Department’s programmes with special emphasis on cultural studies and art and design theory in relation to art and design practice. Furthermore, the employee will develop and carry out research in cultural studies and art and design theory in relation to art and design practice, in line with the Department’s research platform, and to seek external funding for the operations. The employee also contributes to the development of interdisciplinary work within Linnaeus University and with other actors. Work duties may also include leading the development of programmes, research and/or collaboration.
To be eligible for the position of Senior Lecturer, you need to have shown pedagogical proficiency. You need to have completed a PhD or have the equivalent academic competence, or have some other professional competence of relevance when taking into account the subject content of the position and the work duties which it will include (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4, Section 4). In accordance with Linnaeus University employment regulations, “pedagogical proficiency” refers to planning, conducting and evaluating teaching as well as supervision and examination. Academic proficiency shall be displayed through a completed PhD that is relevant to the main subject area, such as cultural studies and/or art theory or similar.
To be qualified for this position, the applicant must also have a well-developed ability to cooperate and a proficiency utilising an advanced understanding of the synergies between theory and practice in teaching, research and other work.
The Department’s programmes are mostly in English, meaning that an ability to and experience of communicating in English, orally and in writing, is required.
Basis of assessment
The proficiency required for the position’s eligibility requirements shall constitute the grounds for evaluation during the appointment of a Senior Lecturer. The examination of pedagogical proficiency will be given the same weight as the examination of academic proficiency.
For this position, it is of particular merit to have previous experience of working with and good knowledge of sustainability with a focus on social sustainability and socially committed art and design as well as intersectionality.
For this position it is also of merit to have well-documented experience of teaching, research and practical work as well as good knowledge of emerging art and design practices such as design for social transformation, socially committed art and art and design with a focus on participation and cooperation.
It is also an advantage if the applicant has good international networks in contemporary socially committed art and design, and the ability and experience of cooperating with the surrounding society, regionally, nationally and internationally. Experience of interdisciplinary work is also merit-worthy.
The applicant should have good experience of practical work and good knowledge of emerging forms of design publishing, experience of performative and experimental writing and writing as critical method. Good leadership skills are important for the long-term development of the activities.
